The council chamber fell silent after my declaration. I could feel the weight of everyone's stares—some pitying, others curious, a few clearly disapproving. My heart hammered in my chest, but I kept my spine straight and my gaze steady on Elder Grant.

"Very well," Elder Grant said, his voice solemn. "As per our traditions, the rejected mates must now formally respond. But first, the council requires you to detail the reasons for your rejection."

Elder Mariam, the only female on the council, leaned forward. Her silver hair was pulled into a severe bun, but her eyes held unexpected kindness. "Ms. Parker, please tell us what drove you to this decision. Be specific."

My throat felt dry. Speaking the truth aloud meant reliving it.

"Take your time," Elder Mariam encouraged.

I took a deep breath. "From the moment I became their mate, the triplets treated me with nothing but cruelty and contempt."
