Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: I Fell on My Own

Two police officers arrived. The lead investigator wasn't the same one from the "Qi Min disappearance" case, but the younger officer trailing behind looked familiar—Qin Guan had seen him twice at Guanlan Court. Likely from the criminal investigation division. Had they come to link Xu Ruyi's injuries to Qi Min?

As the officers followed the nurse and doctor toward him, Qin Guan's throat tightened. Too fast. Who had reported this?

"Officers, it's so early," Qin Guan said, feigning concern. "My wife… she just fell asleep. Her injuries…"

"We'll assess her condition first," the lead officer replied curtly, reviewing medical charts with the doctor.

"Nasal bone fracture from heavy impact, significant blood loss. Superficial wounds on the forehead, scratches on the torso, knee lacerations—no fractures. Stable overall," the doctor explained.

"Wake her," the officer ordered.

Qin Guan had no choice. He opened the door—and froze. Xu Ruyi was already awake.

Her gaze bypassed him, locking onto Auntie Feng, who rushed to adjust her pillows. As she sat up, a phone slipped from beneath the bedding—its screen lit on a WeChat interface.

Qin Guan's pulse spiked. Who had she been messaging?

Xu Ruyi's eyes, cold as winter steel, swept over him. No amount of pleading in his stare softened her.

The lead officer began: "Xu Ruyi, explain last night's events. You were found bloodied near a crashed car. Who attacked you?"

Qin Guan held his breath.

"Attacked? No one hurt me." Xu Ruyi blinked innocently. "The crash happened, but 'attacked'? Who said that? Qin Guan, was it you?"

Her tender tone chilled him.

"My husband overreacts to every scrape." She reached for Qin Guan's hand—a gesture so familiar yet alien. "Darling, why trouble the police? There's no one to arrest unless you're chasing stairs or rocks."

She leaned back, cheeks flushing with mock embarrassment. "This is humiliating… I fell. On my own."
