Chapter 6 - Bilingual

"No, I think I'm good." (Sato)

"Did you say there was homework for me?" (Alya)

"Oh yes, one moment." (Sato)

Sato moved with ease, grabbing the bag hanging off his shoulder and digging through to pull out a folder. The folder was a classic, yet inexpensive, manila folder filled with a small stack of papers, which gave Alya pause as she carefully pulled them out and began to flip through them. Some of the documents seemed purposeful and original to the folder, leading her to believe that it was indeed the homework. However, the other papers gave her pause as she started reading them. Sato shifted awkwardly, but Alya didn't bother looking up at him as she read thoroughly.

"You... gave me notes?" (Alya)

He seemed to flush, glaring at her before sighing, his temporary flare of emotions ebbing away. Alya didn't know, though, due to looking at the notes with a complicated expression. First off, she can't remember much about Algebra, and these notes appear to be advanced mathematics. So, although the notes were thorough, it's like teaching a baby to run even though they haven't learned to walk, let alone crawl.

Her expression was becoming more complicated by the second. Firstly, she is embarrassed because he will have to teach her some of this from the beginning. She is also ecstatic because she can understand his notes, although when it comes to the mathematics part, she understands none of it. Then the English section, she nearly choked from surprise. She can tell that she is reading English now, and she can understand it perfectly. Well, there always has to be a downside with an upside. She has a perfect understanding of English, although she does not understand any of the mathematical portion. Honestly, she was nervous that it would be British English. It used to surprise her every time to learn that one word in her native tongue would be misconstrued in the British dialect of English.

At least she can excel in English, but struggles with mathematics when she doesn't have help. She kept reading the notes, and her eyes started to sparkle with excitement. Magic lessons were what she was looking at for the notes. Real magic, she can cast spells, and she can probably teleport at some point. Although the only drawback is that she needs to find someone to teach her magic, she grasps the concepts, but she wants to learn more. Disappointment showed on her face at the thought of the time it would take to learn magic. But then memories thundered into her head, causing her to flinch in pain, so she reached out with one hand and took a sip of her tea, which had already cooled to lukewarm, if not room temperature.

Tasting the tea, which was now less fragrant at room temperature, made her pout, but she set down her cup and returned to reading the notes. Sato seemed confused by all of her very apparent expressions. Whitch Alya knew she could not hide her expressions. It was worse when she was younger, so now, being in a younger version of herself once more, her thoughts were very apparent. Historical records indicate that the first instance of magic appearing in this world was believed to be caused by the devil, and anyone who could cast magic would be sacrificed to appease the gods. Reading that in the notes, it was a classic fantasy world trope, but she would love to read more of it. Perhaps this time she would be able to retain the information due to the fantastical aspect. It would be like reading a fantasy novel, but it's history. Like anything that catches her interest, her eyes seemed to sparkle with excitement. Then there were notes on magical symbols. She will get herself some books on that.

Setting down the notes, she looked up to see Sato staring at her with confusion and curiosity, probably because of how expressive she is, although at the moment, she doesn't care.

"I'll be honest, your notes are fantastic. I understood nearly everything, and I only read over everything once. However, I will state two things. My understanding of English is higher than what we are currently learning in class. So, having you help me with it is pointless. However, you will have to teach me mathematics from the beginning. I barely remember the mathematical equation to get percentiles." (Alya)

She couldn't help but flush with embarrassment. It's horrible that she was 27 and now has to admit that, even at her age, she remembers almost nothing about mathematics, just what she needed to know to pay taxes and other bills without any struggle, although that is a lie. She struggled with college debt and barely paid it off by her mid-twenties. The only thing that allows her to maintain her expression and not hide her face is the fact that, at the moment, she is 16 and is allowed to be a little academically immature. Sato was staring at her in shock, though.

"What?" (Sato)

That question threw Alya off, making her flushed face return to normal before she tilted her head.

"What?" (Alya)

He seemed to pause before speaking once more.

"Your knowledge of English, you said that you can understand it at a higher level than what is taught in class." (Sato)

"Exactly." (Alya)

"I doubt that." (Sato)

Alya shook her head, although she didn't know if it would work. She took a deep breath, mentally designating what she would say in English instead of automatically speaking in Japanese.

"I am somewhat bilingual." (Alya)

Sato looked confused at what she said and spoke.

"I understood the word I am, what else did you say in English, because that was English, and at this point, I think you're either making up words or being serious about your capability with English." (Sato)

"I said 'I am somewhat bilingual,' which is true." (Alya)

Although this situation is like that of an Isekai, it is still nonsense. She has acquired a mental cheat code that enables her to speak, read, and write Japanese at the same level she had for English, while still maintaining her English comprehension and skills with no modifications. However, the only downside is that she can't tell when people are speaking English or when they are speaking Japanese. She also has to mentally remind herself of what language she is speaking.
