Chapter 1 - Arrival in Mistwood

The road was damaged, barely a road at all.

Was I lost? Selene wondered as she pulled her old suitcases, the wheels getting stuck in every crater she crossed.

She didn't notice the curious stares from the villagers. It was like she'd stepped out of another universe.

She approached an old man who looked kind enough.

"Hi. Is there any homes for rent, or maybe a motel?" she asked, offering a small smile.

Her long black hair with silver highlights whipped in the wind, her face half-hidden by the fog.

"Well, yes, madam… there's a home right up the hill. May I ask where you're coming from?"

She looked up at the hill. There was a small cabin, nothing fancy but decent.

"I'm coming from the city. City life isn't for me, too fast-paced."

The old man chuckled and motioned for her to follow him toward the cabin.

As they walked, she asked, "What's your name? I didn't catch it earlier. Mine's Selene."

"Victor."

"My grandfather was a Victor too," she smiled.

He chuckled again and opened the door to the cabin.

"It's a bit dusty, but I can get someone to clean it for you."

Selene stepped inside, looking around. The place was quaint and simple she could definitely get by here.

"How much is the rent, Mr. Victor?" she asked, setting down her suitcases.

"Just 500 pounds," he answered.

Selene's eyes widened in surprise. That seems low…

"Shall I pay now, or at the end of the month? Is there a deposit?" she asked, glancing around.

Victor smiled. "You can choose whatever is convenient to you, my dear"

He turns to leave but then he remembers something

"I don't mind cats either"

She hesitated. "I don't have any cats."

The old man nodded as if he already knew something she didn't.

After Victor left, Selene started settling in, dusting, changing sheets, sweeping the floor.

Unbeknownst to her, she had already become the talk of the town.

When she finished, she poured herself a glass of wine and thought, Tomorrow, I need to look for a job.
