Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Hunt Begins

Today is a big day—Papa Wolf is taking us on our first hunt as a pack.

You know, not long ago, I used to think this life was better than being human. I didn't have to do anything. Just curl up in the cave, enjoy the meat Papa Wolf brought home, and get a few affectionate nibbles from the other wolf pups. Life was simple and cozy.

But now… it's been six months since I arrived in this world, and things are changing.

This morning, Papa Wolf howled in a way I hadn't heard before. It was deep and commanding, filled with something strange—authority, maybe even pride. I didn't know exactly what it meant, but somehow, I understood him.

It went something like:

Wooooof… Woooof… WOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFF…

And in my mind… something clicked. As if the meaning of his howl was directly translated into my thoughts.

"You're old enough now. It's time to train. Today, you hunt."

I didn't hear those words, exactly—but I understood them. Like they were planted directly into my brain. Maybe this is my cheat ability? A weird translation system? Lame, if you ask me, but hey, it works.

So now here we are: me, my six wolf siblings, Mama Wolf, and Papa Wolf, all heading away from the cave.

We've walked a few kilometers. All I can see is endless snow, with two lonely trees standing in the distance. That's it. No mountains, no rivers, no other landmarks. Just snow, snow, and more snow.

Those two trees actually mark the location of our cave—our "home." Yeah, six months and I've still not seen a change in season. Welcome to the Ice Age, I guess.

I'm walking right behind Papa Wolf. Behind me are the other cubs, and behind them is Mama Wolf, watching over us like a guard. Papa suddenly lets out a low growl, and we all stop in sync.

Living with these wolves for half a year, I've learned to understand basic sounds, gestures, and howls. Sometimes, when they howl, it just… turns into words in my head. Maybe it's instinct. Maybe it's magic. Or maybe I'm just losing it.

Still, the idea hit me again—what if this is my system? Not some overpowered game-like interface, but just this weird ability to understand wolves. If that's my cheat, then damn… I got scammed.

Another low growl from Papa pulls me out of my thoughts.

I follow his gaze and—

What the hell is that?

A rabbit. A massive, eight-foot-tall rabbit. And around it are four or five smaller ones—still large, maybe two feet tall each. But that big one? It looks like it could kill a full-grown man with a single hop.

I almost pissed myself. Actually, scratch that—I did piss myself.

Thankfully, nobody noticed. The other cubs were all staring at the big rabbit, frozen in shock, just like me. I doubt wolves care if someone pees themselves. They're not going to judge me, right? Right…?

I refocused, trying to listen to Papa Wolf again. His growls came in patterns, and my brain automatically translated them.

"We'll distract the big one. You pups focus on the smaller rabbits. This is your target."

He and Mama Wolf howled loudly, the kind that shakes the ground. I almost pissed myself again—but held it in this time.

Without another moment to waste, they dashed toward the giant rabbit, drawing its attention. The enormous creature snarled—yes, snarled—and chased after them. Papa and Mama ran with speed and grace, luring it away.

Now, it was our turn.

The smaller rabbits were still within reach.

This was it—our first hunt.

I glanced at my siblings. They were crouched low, eyes locked on the targets. I took a deep breath.

"Please go well," I prayed silently. "I don't want to die again."
