Chapter 4 - Footsteps Toward Fairy Tail

The first light of dawn stretched slowly across the horizon, brushing the sky with a delicate palette of gold and crimson. From his perch atop the Harven Inn's weathered roof, Kairo Dusk let his legs dangle freely over the edge, the cool morning breeze tugging gently at his dark coat. Despite the fresh day, faint traces of soot still clung stubbornly to the fabric—the aftermath of last night's brutal battle against the Emberhowl.

He exhaled slowly, eyes half-closed, savouring the quiet before the village stirred awake. The faint chirping of birds and the distant murmur of early risers were the only sounds breaking the serene silence. Here, alone in the soft morning, Kairo finally allowed himself a moment of reflection.

Pulling his coat tighter against a subtle chill, he shifted, reached inside, and summoned the familiar glow of his system menu. The digital interface flickered into existence before him—a comforting beacon in a world that was still new and unpredictable.

His gaze lingered on the Class Selection Token. A choice that could shape everything ahead. He ran through the options again in his mind.

Spellblade? Sure, the blend of sword and magic was tempting—versatile, deadly—but it didn't resonate with him.

Trickster Rogue? Too sneaky, too indirect. Kairo preferred a more straightforward approach.

Shadowflame Adept? That name alone sent a spark through him. It felt like an extension of himself—flames dancing in the shadows, power tempered by subtlety.

He inhaled deeply, the crisp morning air filling his lungs and steadying his nerves.

"System", he said firmly, "Use Class Selection Token. Choose: Shadowflame Adept."

A soft chime rang out.

[Class Chosen: Shadowflame Adept]

Kairo's lips curved into a rare grin. The magic coursing through him felt refined now—not raw sparks, but a purposeful blaze, tempered and deadly. His fingertips tingled with newfound energy, and an eager fire sparked within his chest.

By mid-morning, the sun had climbed higher and warmed the earth, and Kairo had packed his sparse belongings. The time had come to leave Harven Village behind.

His goal was clear—Magnolia.

The bustling city was famed across Fiore as the home of the legendary Fairy Tail guild. A place where mages tested their limits and where strength wasn't just measured by magic but by heart and camaraderie.

Kairo had heard whispers among the villagers—stories of raucous brawls in taverns, wild mages throwing spells as casually as breathing, and the unbreakable bond that held the guild together. If there was any place in this world where he could grow stronger—and faster—it was there.

More than that, something deep inside him pulled toward it, like a silent call to come home.

The road to Magnolia stretched far ahead, winding through dense forests where sunlight filtered through the canopy like golden dust, and across rolling fields awash with spring's fresh scent. The air was alive with promise, and Kairo welcomed the solitude to train and improve.

Along the way, he hunted to sharpen his skills. Boars snuffled in the underbrush, wolves prowled the tree line, and once, he came upon a band of goblins harassing a merchant caravan.

He didn't hesitate.

『Enemy Party Defeated — +280 EXP』

『Loot: Goblin Tooth x6, Rusted Shortsword, 32 Silver』

『Level Up! You are now Level 5. Stat Points +5.

Five new points glowed invitingly on his status screen. He allocated them carefully: 2 to INT for sharper magic, 2 to AGI to move quicker and dodge more fluidly, and 1 to LCK—because sometimes, a little luck made all the difference.

With each step forward, his spells grew sharper, his senses keener. The world felt more vibrant, more tangible, and he was ready to face whatever awaited.

As the sun began to sink toward the horizon, casting long shadows and bathing the landscape in fiery amber, Magnolia finally appeared. Even from a distance, the city was magnificent—cobbled streets winding beneath sturdy stone walls, elegant bridges arching over serene canals, and towers reaching skyward to catch the fading light.

Kairo's pace quickened, excitement fluttering in his chest. Passing through the massive gates, he felt a strange but welcome warmth swell within him—something like belonging.

The city was alive in a way Harven never was. Voices called out from bustling markets, vendors hawked their goods with practised flair, and the air buzzed with the crackle of magic. Wizards sparred openly in alleys, their spells painting the air with dazzling colours.

Children dashed past him, laughing as carts rattled by and dogs barked in chase. The scents of fresh bread, roasting meat, and blooming flowers mingled and filled Kairo's senses.

Ahead, dominating the end of a wide avenue, stood the Fairy Tail guild hall. Its large wooden doors bore the guild's fiery emblem proudly, and colourful banners fluttered in the breeze.

Kairo approached, heart pounding in anticipation.

He reached out to push the door—

Suddenly—

BOOM!

The entire building trembled as a heavy table shattered through one of the windows, scattering shards of glass across the street.

A red-haired woman stepped onto the porch, unruffled, her armour gleaming dully in the fading light. Her sharp eyes scanned the street with calm authority.

Inside, chaos reigned.

A blond man, clearly drunk, chased another around the room, fire crackling dangerously from his fingertips. Nearby, a shirtless man with a red scarf was locked in a heated argument with an ice mage, who had frozen several chairs and a mug in protest.

All bore the unmistakable mark of Fairy Tail.

Kairo took a slow breath and smiled to himself.

"Yep. This is it."

He stepped inside the guild hall, the noise dimming just slightly as dozens of eyes turned toward the newcomer. Whispers rippled through the crowd as Kairo felt their weighty gazes evaluating him—curious, wary, interested.

The red-haired woman from the porch gave him a once-over, as did a pink-haired mage who still seemed mid-argument with her rival.

"Recruit?" a deep voice called from the bar.

Kairo turned to see a stout man with a thick moustache and broad shoulders standing behind the counter—Master Makarov, the guild's leader.

With a respectful bow, Kairo answered, "I'd like to join Fairy Tail."

A hum of murmurs rose around him.

Makarov chuckled, folding his arms. "That's a big statement, walking in off the street. Got any proof to back it up, son?"

Kairo nodded confidently. "I completed a C-rank quest solo on Mt Suldra. I killed an Emberhowl variant."

Whistles and impressed murmurs spread through the room. Not many mages took on such beasts alone.

Makarov raised a brow. "Impressive."

Kairo added quietly, "And I use a magic most haven't seen before—Shadowflame."

A ripple of interest ran through the guild members.

Natsu, the red-haired fire mage, grinned widely. "Shadowflame? Sounds awesome!"

Gray snorted sceptically. "Bet it's just black fire or some nonsense."

Kairo smiled, fingers already warming with magic. "I'd be happy to show you."

Before the tension could escalate into a duel, Makarov raised a hand.

"Save it for the arena, boys. Kairo Dusk, is it?"

"Yes."

With a deliberate motion, Makarov pulled a stamp from his coat and held it out.

"Welcome to Fairy Tail."

A warm, violet glow pulsed as the guild's emblem burned onto Kairo's right forearm. It felt like a brand of belonging, a new bond forged.

『System Alert: Title Gained — [Fairy Tail Initiate]』

— Guild Bonuses Unlocked

— Guild Quests Available

— NPC Affection System: Fairy Tail Cast (Activated)

That evening, Kairo sat at the bar, a hearty bowl of stew warming his hands as Natsu and Gray argued loudly beside him, Lucy shaking her head in amused exasperation.

Erza approached, her graceful presence commanding the space as she slid onto the stool next to him, balancing a plate with practised ease.

"You held your own back there," she said quietly, slicing her food with precise calm. "That's rare in this guild."

Kairo met her steady gaze. "I've been through a lot."

Erza's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "You'll be tested here, often, harshly. If your magic is as dangerous as you claim, control will be your greatest weapon."

He nodded. "That's why I'm here."

Her lips curved faintly. "Good. Then survive long enough to learn."

As the guild's laughter and music swelled around him, Kairo glanced down at the glowing emblem on his arm.

The world had accepted him.

And now, it was time to rise.
