"I need to apologize," I said, forcing the words out. "For challenging you yesterday. I shouldn't have interfered."
The half-truth tasted bitter on my tongue. I didn't regret defending the freshman, but I needed to end this torment. My panic attack had left me drained, and the constant proximity to Rhys was making my rejection mark burn like fire against my skin.
Rhys's expression darkened as he loomed over me. "You think a simple apology changes anything?"
"No, but—"
"But nothing," he cut me off. "Your little apology doesn't erase your disrespect. It doesn't change what you are."
I pressed my back harder against the door. "And what am I, exactly?"
"A disappointment," he said coldly. "The reason I might never find my perfect mate."
Each word stabbed deeper than any physical pain. I fought to keep my expression neutral, but inside, my wolf whimpered.
"The Moon Goddess chose me for you," I whispered. "I didn't ask for this."
