I stared at the blank document on my laptop, the cursor blinking mockingly at me. I'd promised Mom I'd prepare my college application essays this weekend, but my mind kept wandering. Despite my outward nerdish appearance, I wasn't completely sure a traditional college path was what I wanted anymore.
"Elara!" Mom called from downstairs. "I'm heading to the hospital for my shift! Leftovers are in the fridge!"
"Okay, Mom! Love you!" I yelled back, hearing the front door close moments later.
With Mom gone, the house fell silent. I pulled off my glasses and rubbed my eyes. Since she'd started dating Alistair, Mom had been happier than I'd seen her in years. Even though Alistair was Ethan's dad—and by extension, part of Rhys's inner circle—he treated Mom with such tenderness that I couldn't help but be happy for her.
My phone buzzed with an incoming call, lighting up with Seraphina's name and a group call notification. I answered, grateful for the distraction.
