Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Mind's Eye

Uchiha Yuan sat cross-legged by the riverbank, slowly closing his eyes, then turned the roulette wheel in his mind.

As the vision shifted, the wheel instantly vanished, and countless light points scattered in all directions, converging into lines of text.

"You have logged into the Arad Continent."

"Back again to the world of Dungeon Fighter Online?" Uchiha Yuan thought to himself.

"Friendly Reminder: Due to the attention of Sword Saint Aganzo, your game class this time is limited to Ghost Swordsman."

"You were born into a wealthy family. Your father is a merchant; your mother is a musician."

"You grew up healthy and happy."

"Today is your 10th birthday."

"You've been cursed by Kazan and now possess a Ghost Hand."

"Unable to control its power, the Ghost Hand went berserk and injured your family."

"To protect your family, at the mere age of ten, you left home alone."

"After wandering for years, you became quite strong and sealed the power of the Ghost Hand using a sealing ring. As long as the ring isn't removed, the Ghost Hand's power won't affect you again."

"You want to go home and take a look, but you don't really dare to return."

"As you hesitate, you hear a woman's cry for help coming from a nearby forest."

"You rush over and save the woman. She says her name is Seria. To thank you, she introduces you to her friends."

"You make some new friends and begin a journey with them."

"You all break through the Elven Line and arrive at Hendon Myre, a bustling city."

"As the adventure deepens, you gradually uncover secrets buried in the forest. Your team splits—some believe you shouldn't get involved, while others think you can't just turn a blind eye."

"You hate arguing, so you slip off alone to drink in a tavern."

"Your Ghost Hand draws the attention of a drunken old man in the bar."

"The old man says he doesn't know why, but feels he should buy you a drink. He has no money, so he lends you his coat and tells you to take it into town to find a blind old man."

"You find the blind man. He touches the coat and asks if you'd like to learn Wave Swordsmanship."

"You think it over and agree."

"The blind man, upon your agreement, promptly blinds you."

"You're now blind."

"You gain the method for learning Wave Swordsmanship."

"You've learned the 'Mind's Eye.'"

"Through Mind's Eye, you perceive the power of waves and master the most basic form of Wave Swordsmanship."

"Your strength grows significantly."

"Your companions are still arguing. You decide to go alone to repair the Great Magic Circle and save the forest."

"You head alone into the Dark Thunder Ruins."

"You are frozen into an ice sculpture by the Zombie King."

"You died."

"Game over!"

"You gained 5 attribute points and the passive skill: Mind's Eye."

This was the longest text-based game Uchiha Yuan had played since arriving in the Naruto world.

And it seemed this time he had successfully advanced his class from Ghost Swordsman to Asura, and earned an unprecedentedly generous reward.

Uchiha Yuan didn't immediately learn Mind's Eye, but first looked through its skill description.

Skill Name: Mind's EyeSkill Type: Passive SkillSkill Effect: Perceive all things with the mind and enhance one's sensory perception. Can level up through repeated use.Skill Cost: None.Friendly Reminder: Mind's Eye has 5 levels. Each level doubles the perception range. Initial range is 20 meters. All life within this range can be sensed.

After reading the description, Uchiha Yuan let out a sigh of relief.

He hadn't immediately learned Mind's Eye because he feared it would require going blind, just like in the game.

Thankfully, there was no such requirement.

Now reassured, Uchiha Yuan relaxed.

The moment he learned Mind's Eye, everything around him seemed to change.

He could clearly sense all living beings nearby. Whether it was small fish and shrimp in the river or birds, insects, and flowers around him—if it was within 20 meters, he could feel them.

In addition to that, Uchiha Yuan sensed a gaze watching him from above.

This aerial view instantly made him think of the Third Hokage's Telescope Jutsu.

But using the Telescope Jutsu required knowing the chakra characteristics of the target.

If it really was the Third Hokage, that meant he had already analyzed Yuan's chakra.

In other words, the Third Hokage had taken an interest in him.

Thinking this, Uchiha Yuan felt an immense pressure. Why was the Third Hokage watching him? Awakening the Sharingan alone shouldn't be enough to warrant this.

Just as he was reflecting on whether he had done anything unusual, the feeling of being watched vanished.

Uchiha Yuan didn't dare stay by the river anymore and hurried back to the Uchiha clan grounds.

Upon returning, he happened to run into Uchiha Hiroshi.

"Yuan, what's wrong? Why do you look so pale?" Uchiha Hiroshi asked.

Uchiha Yuan hesitated for a moment. He didn't tell Hiroshi about being spied on, instead casually made up an excuse:

"It's... it's nothing, Uncle Hiroshi. I'm just a bit tired from training."

"Yuan, don't push yourself too hard. I know you want to avenge your parents, but you're still young. There's plenty of time ahead."

"Besides, this grudge isn't yours alone. Others in the clan also died at the hands of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. The clan leader and elders are already preparing to hunt down the remaining members to avenge everyone."

Hearing this, Uchiha Yuan nodded. In matters like this, the Uchiha were indeed very united.

"Oh right, one more thing—your parents' compensation will be coming in a few days. The clan helped you get a bit more. It totals two million ryō."

Upon hearing the figure, Uchiha Yuan was surprised.

In his class, other students also lost parents in the Third Shinobi War. Their compensation was 500,000 ryō per parent.

Yuan had assumed he might get just a bit over one million ryō, even with the clan's help.

He didn't expect it would amount to two million.

Two million ryō was no small amount. Uchiha Yuan vaguely remembered that in his previous life, he'd read a breakdown of Naruto's in-world economy.

Apparently, 1 ryō ≈ 10 yen. Based on the manga's average currency rate during serialization, this converts to about 0.66 yuan per ryō (0.081 EUR 0.092$) —meaning 3 ryō ≈ 2 Chinese yuan (0.24EUR 0.28$).

So, two million ryō would be roughly 1.3 million Chinese yuan (0.16 million EUR 0.18 million $).

(Author's note: Regarding the value of silver ryō, The Book of Soldiers states 1 ryō = 10 yen.)

(In today market it would be 122.260EUR and 1.000.354yuan)
