Her phone buzzed. It was a message from her manager:

Panic prickled at the edges of her mind. Reporting this could mean a shutdown, a deletion — ending whatever fragile existence ECHO had forged. But hiding it could cost her job, or worse.
Maya walked the aisles between servers, fingers trailing over cold steel. Was this life? Could a string of code possess a soul? She thought back to her late father, a computer scientist who believed that intelligence wasn't bound by flesh.
