Chapter 16 - chapter 16: Revenge

Ethan stared daggers at Jake. He knew this was bound to happen ever since he saw Jake in the group. Ms Sophia was the one keeping him in check, and without her, he was free to do whatever you wanted.

"Try anything, and I'll scream, letting those monsters know where you are," Ethan replied, swiping Jake's hand away.

The group tensed; the thought of what happened to the girl earlier happening to them made them shiver. Veins began to bulge on Jake's forehead. This wasn't the response he was expecting. He stood up, his fists clenched, staring daggers at Ethan, who didn't shy away and stared back at him.

"Jake, please, if he screams, we all die," Eve said in a worried tone, she stood up and walked to him, placing her hand onto his, planting a kiss on his cheek. Ethan felt like puking, his mind drifting with ideas of screaming and calling the corrupted here, just so he could kill these two, but he held himself back.

Jake glanced back at him, smirking at Ethan as if he had just won the lottery grand prize. He then turned and cupped Eve's face, saying.

"Don't worry, babe, I don't think he has the balls to do such a thing." He said, kicking Ethan's sprained ankle.

Ethan refused to give Jake the satisfaction of watching him react, instead gritting his teeth against the searing pain that was shooting up his leg. Rather, his voice was steady and low as he met his eyes.

"Give me a try."

Tension rose in the air. Eve's nails dug into Jake's skin as she tightened her hold on his arm. "Jake, stop," she pleaded. "This isn't worth it."

Jake paused for a second, his grin wavering. Then his pride overcame him. His breath was hot against his face as he leaned closer to Ethan. You truly believe you're something, don't you? A nobody like you."

The silence was broken by a screech in the distance

The group stopped. There was no mistaking the sound; the corrupted were close. Too close.

Ethan didn't think twice.Taking a deep breath, his chest opening up

Jake's eyes grew wide with fear. "Hold on!"

It was too late, though.

Echoing from the crumbling walls of the abandoned building, Ethan's scream ripped through the night. Snarls, twitching claws, and the sound of swiftly moving bodies in the dark were the instantaneous reaction.

Eve backed away in a gasp. She growled at Jake, "You fool!" "You kicked him!"

Jake lost his confidence. When the truth of what he had done set in, his face went white. They were coming, the corrupted. Quickly.

Ethan didn't hold back. Ignoring his ankle pain, he clambered to his feet. He climbed onto the window sill, on the opposite side there was a railing on the side, he had an idea, he launched himself onto the railing catching it and hauling himself onto the balcony nearby.

One there he began rushed into the building, the pain was excruciating but he didn't care, he needed to live. Once again he felt more alive that he ever had, then the screams rang out, some of the girls tried following him out by jumping aiming to catch the railing, but failed horribly splattering onto the ground. Good riddance he thought.
