My brother. He was laying on my bed going through my stuff. I ran towards him to take away my letter I had written. He didn't want to give it to me. Then he teased me with a letter in front of my face then I grabbed it.
"Never seen you writing. Who taught you?" I knew if I dont tell him he wouldn't leave me alone.
"Lily." I pushed him down out of my bed and towards the doors downstairs. "Now leave."
"Does mother know?" He knows mother dont know that is why he is pushing my nerves. I just rolled my eyes and pushed him harder. "Okay, okay. I am leaving." He just looked last time at me with a smirk on his face. "Oh and say hi to Lily."
"LEAVE!" When I closed the door when he left I looked around the room to see what he could see because he was never in my room before and I didnt need to worry about things laying around. I flopped into bed and closed my eyes. Darkness surrounded me and I fell asleep.
Morning came quickly. I stretched my arms above me. All my muscles hurt from yesterday. I quickly sat down when I remembered yesterday. I hope my mother won't say anything. I screwed up a lot this week already and I just need her to explode at me. Carefully opened the door and I squeezed my head down to hear what everyone was doing.
Hearing the sound of wood being scraped I know my brother is in his room doing sculpture. Mother was definitely cooking because all I could smell was soup with peas and chicken and it was quiet in the house, so father was not at home. I quickly dropped down the stairs and went into the kitchen. Mother ignored me as I went to fill my jug of water. She knows. When I was returning to my room I looked down to see shoes and there is no sight of fathers shoes. He is definitely drunk somewhere.
I returned to my room or attic, however you would call that. My room is mostly filled with old stuff and boxes. I went through almost all the boxes. There is one box I was avoiding as far as I could remember. It was my grandma's box and I miss her strongly. I opened the window to let air in and there he was. My void, my Mittens. Waiting for me to let him in. He purred as he came in and he lay directly on my bed. His purring got stronger as I brush him with my hand through his long black fur.
I passed out next to him and I was woken up by someone calling my name from downstairs. Carefully I stood not to wake up the cat but he only stretched his paws. Sneakily went to check who it was. It was Lily, when I looked downstairs I saw her staring into my brother's room. He didn't notice her because he still is deep into his sculpturing. I whispered so he couldn't hear me.
"Lily! Come up and hurry." I signaled her to hurry up. While she was climbing up I made a disgusted grimace. When she was finally in the room I quickly pulled up stairs and closed doors.
"So I have this box for the longest time I can remember and I want to open it." While I was telling her about the box I was actively looking for it. "Apparently it is old heritage that is passed down generations." I finally found a box and we sat down on the dusty floor.
"Ah that is why you wanted to see me today."
"Granny said not to show it to anyone."
"And why am I here then if you can't show me?" I didn't know what to say. Lily then started to get up and wanted to leave.
"But hey, I didn't say I won't show you." I smiled in excitement and Lily sat back next to me.
"So what are we waiting for'" Lily was rubbing her hand like flies sometimes do.
"Yeah, what are we waiting for?" We both got scared of a boy who was sitting in an open window. His voice immediately makes you melt and chills how deep it is. But his face and voice don't go together. It was deep and not deep at the same time.
"FLYNN!" Lily got up and pulled him in the closed window. I swear I almost got blinded because of his hair. It is so white but it compliments him. Today was unusually bright outside so I rarely notice how beautiful his hair is in this gloomy weather. His hair touched edges of his cheeks bones that had freckles and it nicely flowed down to his shoulders. I especially liked when he would put his hair in a little pony tail and left edges out of it.
"What?" He shrugged his shoulders at Lily. When he looked at me I couldn't not smile back.
"Just come and sit and whatever I show you can't leave this room. You tell no one." I was serious. I cant let anyone know this. I couldn't not wait longer to show them what Granny had left me.
"Ta da." I showed them the CD player. Only response by them I got was confusion on their faces. Lily was looking between me and the CD player. It took some time for Lily to recognise it. She was suddenly surprised and I was relieved because I thought they wont recognise it.
"I know what this is. I learned about it in school. But they didn't have it. How did you get it?" Lily couldn't wait for me to answer the question. "Can I touch it?"
"Yea go for it." I handed it to Lily and Flynn didn't say anything yet. Lily then looked at Flynn and asked him.
"Don't tell me you don't know what this is. Flynn, it is a CD player. It has not been seen in a long time. But Rose, we need batteries for it to play." I did come prepared. Week before they started to hunt Marcus I managed to get some batteries." Lily didn't wait a second; she just grabbed them from me. I could just smile at her excitement.
"Let me do it." Flynn asked politely but Lily didn't give up.
"We just need something to put in to play sound." She looked a little sad. Signaling to her to look in the box she saw a couple of CDs. When Lily was ready to play music she fixed her posture and cleaned her throat and flipped her hair. Then she pressed the start button and music loudly came on the CD player. Three of us were surprised because we didn't expect it to be so loud.
Lily quickly stopped the music. "Sorry I didn't know it would be that loud." I put my finger on lips to signal her to be quiet so I could hear if mother was coming. I felt relieved, but at that very moment my mother arrived in the room. It's funny looking at how mother needed to climb stairs while being mad.
"See you at the market later." I helped them to get up and pushed them towards the window. Firstly they didn't want to leave but when they saw my mother all angry they left.
"What did Grandma tell you about this box?" her veins on her forehead were popping out when she was yelling. "Do you want to get yourself killed, us killed?" I felt really guilty and sorry. If I could turn back time I would but not for mothers sake. "You are always like that, always doing some shit."
"Well I need to do my part for you to start regretting the decision for bringing me to this world. where I can't even live properly." I bit my tongue regretting saying that. And in the blink of an eye happened something I never would've happened. I got slapped and by looking at my mother she was shocked too. But this is not the first time she has done this. But it was just unexpected this time.
My eyes watered but I didn't want my mother to see that I almost cried so I turned around. I felt like this ten seconds before mother left were hours. I stood like that for minutes even when she left but finally when I heard mother back in the kitchen cooking my tears came out. I pulled the end of my shirt to wipe them off and I put a smile on like nothing happened when I looked at Mittens, he did not leave bed.
"Lucky you little cat." When I said that he jumped on the window frame and jumped down. Following him I took an old rusty book and put it carefully on the window frame so the window could not close till the end. I stepped on the roof and carefully closed the window then jumped down. Looking at the sky I could not see clouds on it. Then I felt Mittens rub against my foot so I pet him.
"Did you also leave because of this old annoying lady?" I proceeded to go through very fluffy fur, and he raised his tail like an antenna looking for a signal. I genuinely giggled today for the first time.
"Is this cat yours?"
"Kind of. I feed him occasionally. I think you can tell that. Right Mittens?" I giggled again and I was still petting him when I looked up. I saw a boy with a hoodie on. Only his face was showing and that was enough for me to be mesmerised with his beauty. But why do I feel like I saw him already?
"You can pet him if you want."
As he got closer and crouched next to me, a unique smell hit my nose that I would for sure remember. He smells like a pine tree and I really like it. I never knew someone would smell so attractive. When he was petting Mittens I stole a few glances from him. Then when I saw his hair I was shocked and left. He didn't notice me leaving. I could hear him asking me for his name but I was already behind the house, at the corner. I took a quick look at him but he just put a hoodie on his face and he walked away.
"Come to sense Rose. Come on." I was telling myself. I let strange noises come out of me when I shuffled my hair in frustration. Then Mittens came and sat in front of me and looked at me.
"Don't look at me. This is your fault. Why didn't you say something? What if he recognised me?" I blew out the rest of the air through my nose and then took a deep breath again. Lets not panic. Okay? Okay. Then I proceed to go to the market. And Mittens followed me.
