Chapter 1 - A long awaited talk

It was quite awkward not being face to face, as they both were back to back currently, but maybe that's for the best with a conversation like this, he thought. Currently, both him and Cassie were trapped in a cell while that abomination, prince of nothing, is wreaking havoc outside. But with just the two of them, it's probably the best time to talk about it. It's time for them to finally talk about what happened on that forgotten shore, where only steel remembers.

Sunny spoke, his voice weaker than it would have been due to his lack of nutrients for the time they've spent in the cell.

"Cass… are you awake?"

He waited for her response—if she would give one, that is. Moments later, she did just that, speaking, her voice even weaker than his.

"I am…"

It was a short response, possibly because she didn't have the energy to put more into it. Thinking on it, he didn't know how to even begin the conversation. He knew it needed to happen, but I guess he just didn't know how to start it. So he decided to be as blunt as possible.

"Why. Why did you do it?"

He knew she would understand. There was no way she wouldn't. After all, if he could feel the tension, then she could feel it ten times more than him.

Her response took a while. He could only assume she was organizing her jumbled thoughts, which he could not blame her for. After all, this probably isn't the best position to be in for a heartfelt conversation—especially one like this. Though eventually, she did speak, her words flowing gracefully but carefully placed, as if reflecting her as a person.

"I had two options…"

She paused once more before speaking again.

"No matter which one I chose, I would lose something. Something I could possibly never get back."

He could feel her shifting, her body uncharacteristically laying her head onto his back—well, head—since they were quite similar in height. Then she spoke once more.

"I could do nothing but choose the option that felt the best to me. There was no right option, as no matter what, someone would be wronged."

With a drawn-out pause, she continued.

"But even then, there was an option that made the most sense…"

Sunny had his eyes closed, patiently waiting to speak as she closed up her side.

"I can't change the past, and I can't choose the best future, but… what I can do is make sure the present is prepared. Even with that ability, I couldn't prepare for what happened… something like that was far too much for my hands, being as small as they were at the time."

Sunny breathed in, only holding it for a moment before breathing out. He was angry. He had every right to be, and he was sure she knew that too. But still, he can't help but see the truth in her statement. Back then, they would be called children by the current them. The spell… no… fate was cruel to both of them. But that fact can't erase the past, no matter what happened—or happens, even.

The fact he saw the white string that day he used the enchantment on Weaver's mask is proof enough. That being said, he only allowed these thoughts to go on for a moment before speaking.

"I can't forgive you."

He decided that since she gave him the truth, he can give her his.

"But I can live in the present. I… no, we can't erase the past, but…"

He thought how he should put the next words that would come out his mouth. He didn't want to ruin the moment, after all.

"We can make a future together where, even for a moment—even for the smallest portion of time allotted to us with limited time on this world, two worlds even—then we can make a future that outshines that past."

He couldn't help but think about how embarrassing something like that was to say. Even so, he's glad it's off his chest now. As he waited, his ears picked up on light snoring. He couldn't help but smile, slightly annoyed and slightly happy she didn't hear what he said.

Remembering their current confinement, he closed his eyes.

"Goodnight, Cass…"

Slowly drifting off into an uncomfortable slumber, he didn't stay awake long enough to hear what echoed around the walls of the cell next.

"Goodnight, Sunny…"
