Chapter 1 - I'm not a God Hunter

Grr. Grr.

Dragging chains. Ghastly sounds. No presence of a human here.

A girl with short hair sneezed.

She was sure some demon was cursing her here. But where was the demon? She looked left and right. Despite the absence of light, she could clearly see the surroundings. As a demigod, she had certain extraordinary powers. Powers she used for the job of hunting.

She also had an extreme aversion to demons. Why? Because demons occupied territories of gods and that kind of hatred passed down as generational trauma to all the demigods. It didn't happen long ago.

It was just two hundred years ago when technology started rapidly evolving and gods started losing their faith. Without anyone needing them, their existence was simply a waste of resources. And gods started falling asleep, they started fading out of existence.

Minor gods died and major gods became comatose. And demigods, well, they formed families with humans diluting their god powers. But there are always extreme families who frown upon such "other blood".

Growl.

The girl smiled and spun around, effectively dodging the fire attack sent by the demon.

"You really think I can't see you?"

The demon growled in anger.

"You can't do anything other than growling, can you?"

Another angry growl.

"Okay, let's just end the matter here."

She wore a hair tie on her wrist and it looked like a weird bracelet. She removed it and threw it at the demon. The hair tie grew and then stuck on the demon's neck and it was done. The demon was controlled.

With the demon losing its abilities, the darkness was gone and the entire place was illuminated.

It was an abandoned park with broken swings and benches. And overgrown weeds. A perfect place for someone with a negative aura to thrive and to contaminate humans.

The girl looked around and sighed and then she focused on the demon.

Hiss.

What was this? A cat demon? She rubbed her eyes. When did cats start becoming demons? Weren't they cute angels?

"Sweetie, why are you so angry? Did no one feed you? Come here. I'll take you to the airport. I'm the most promising hunter in our team. I can earn so much in a day and you can eat whatever you want with me. Do you want to come with me?"

She looked at the demon cat carefully. The cat turned away from her.

"Meow meow meow meeeeoooew."

As a demigod, she had another power. She understood what demons talked about. And the cat demon was cursing. Real bad.

"Sorry, sorry, I thought you were completely demonized. You know, those big demons, the ones who kill people. I thought it was you."

The cat launched into another flurry of verbal attacks.

The girl scratched her head and then decided to apologize. A cute cat was worth groveling for a while.

"Sorry, sorry. I'll remove the tie, here," the tie that controlled the cat's powers loosened and flew back to her and became the same size as before. She wore it on her hand all the while smiling friendly at the cat.

But the cat paid no attention to her and then ran away.

The girl stood there watching the running cat blankly.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid, why don't you see before you throw the tie? Next time, will you attack a human thinking it was a demon, huh?"

She smacked her forehead and scolded herself.

She checked for a bench to sit down and retrace her steps. This was her tenth mission this month and only five days of the month were passed. She knew that she would be exhausted by the time she could ask for her vacation on the twenty-fifth.

She found a clean patch of grass and sat down to meditate. With the loss of energy in the battle, she needed to recuperate. Otherwise, how could she find the culprit demon?

The girl mediated and the lurking demon moved. A black fog assembled from every corner of the park and materialized as a half-human, a human with a chicken head.

The chicken demon had red eyes and looked angrily at the girl. It slowly moved towards the unaware girl.

The demon was visibly happy looking at the decreasing distance as if it could taste the blood of this meddling human. More importantly, this meddling human had the scent of gods and that was a great tonic to it. It could become a demon lord if it could devour the essence of this human.

The demon chicken was before the girl now and stretched its claws to her neck. A shadow whooshed and pushed the girl away.

The girl opened her eyes and looked at the shadow.

"Cat, you like me, right? Otherwise, why would you save me?"

The cat demon looked at the girl incredulously and then cursed again.

"Okay, okay, I know. I'm not stupid. Wasn't I just luring that idiot here? I won't put myself in danger. See, I'm not stupid."

The car looked at her with confusion and the demon chicken looked at her with enormous anger. The demon chicken attacked.

The girl moved at lightning speed and zapped the chicken with a fire attack. They exchanged tens of moves while the cat watched. Seeing that the girl was not losing, the cat moved away and licked its paw.

The cat is not interested in the fight.jpg

But the fight ensued and the girl won.

"You, why are you here? I don't kill humans."

The chicken head was in her grasp and the chicken demon was flailing weakly.

"Huh, but you make them feel so negative that they want to jump off a building. Isn't that bad?"

"How is that my fault that they are so weak? Humans aren't like before. Before even if I told them to jump off a building, they wouldn't."

The girl sneered.

"You are coming with me now."

"God hunter, please, I'm a chicken with a family. My chicks haven't hatched yet. My eggs need me."

The girl looked at the chicken in silence. She then noticed a glaring fact.

"Just because I call you a chicken, don't try to fool me. I don't think males like you lay eggs."

The chicken demon paused his flailing.

"And I'm not a God hunter. Which idiot named this? I'm a certified demon hunter. See. We look for gods, not demons."

"Then that means you are hunting for gods."

The girl looked at the chicken in exasperation.

"We search for gods to revive them and hunt demons to stop them. There's a difference. When you see released from your sentence, be sure to tell your friends, tell them you were caught by a demon hunter."

The chicken demon nodded.

The girl tied the tie to the demon and looked for the cat demon.

"You helped me now. Do you want to accept the reward?"

The cat paid no attention and kept licking its fur.

"We can get you premium cat food."

The cat turned back and walked towards her.

That's how a very strange scene, even for the demon hunters, occurred.

A cat demon herding a chicken demon followed by a starry-eyed demon hunter.

"Evy, the boss called you. He is angry."

The girl just walked into the building and heard this. She stiffened.

"That, can you take this demon to the briefing? I'll be back."

Evy walked to the office trembling.

"You were seen. Do you know the consequences?"
