Chapter 22 - Chapter 21: Return to the Mundane (Part 2)

"The process is... straightforward," he said. "I'm going to access her biological systems and correct the damage caused by the leukemia. It shouldn't hurt, but you may feel strange sensations."

"How long does it take?" David asked anxiously.

How long? After months of experience manipulating consciousness and energy on an interdimensional scale, curing human leukemia would be like... like changing a burned-out light bulb.

"A few minutes," I replied.

It was a dramatic understatement. He could probably cure her in seconds. But he needed to make it seem like it required significant concentration and effort.

I positioned myself next to Sarah, placing a hand close to her shoulder without touching.

"Sarah, I'm going to start now. Just relax."

I closed my eyes and... felt.

Her biological system opened to my perception like a book. I could see cancer cells clearly—tiny dots of disorder in a harmonious pattern that should be healthy blood. I could see her immune system failing, her organs straining, her life force waning.

It was so simple.

"System," I muttered silently, "medical cure protocol. Acute leukemia. Complete regeneration."

I didn't use formal vocal commands. I didn't want to overload the system with such a basic task. It was like using a quantum supercomputer to do simple addition.

Energy flowed through me into her. Not dramatic, visible energy - subtle flow that began to rewrite her biological code cell by cell.

Cancer cells simply... stopped. Then they dissolved. Her immune system was reset to optimal settings. Damaged organs were repaired. Energy levels were restored.

Within 30 seconds, Sarah was completely healed.

But I pretended it took longer. I held my hand in position for three minutes, occasionally frowning as if concentrating intently.

"It's working," I murmured. "I can feel cancer cells being... neutralized."

It was a performance for the benefit of the observers. In reality, the process had ended almost instantly.

During those three minutes of theater, I noticed obvious changes in Sarah. Color returned to her face. Breathing became easier. Eyes gained clarity they hadn't had before.

"My God," Katharina whispered, watching the medical monitors. "Her vital signs are... normalizing rapidly."

"Impossible," Markus muttered. "It can't be that fast."

Finally, I opened my eyes and pulled my hand away.

"Finished," I announced.

Sarah sat down in the chair, a movement that had been impossible for her minutes before. She looked at her own hands in awe, then at me.

"I feel... amazing," she said, her voice now strong and clear. "Like I've been asleep for years and finally woken up."

David was crying openly. "Sarah? How do you feel?"

"I feel better than I did before I got sick," she replied, rising from her chair without difficulty. "It's like my body is... new."

It was an accurate description. He had essentially given her a completely rebuilt body, optimized for perfect health.

Katharina was staring at the monitors with an expression of complete shock. "Kai... all cancer markers are gone. Blood counts are perfect. Organ function is... beyond normal. It's in the upper human range for all indicators."

"How is this possible?" Markus asked, camera still recording everything.

How could he explain that he had used technology more advanced than anything that existed on Earth to perform repairs that intergalactic civilizations considered basic routine?

"Process involves direct interfacing with biological systems," I replied vaguely. "Correction of cellular patterns at the fundamental level."

It was an explanation that sounded scientific without revealing anything real.

David hugged his sister, both of them crying with joy and relief. It was a genuinely touching moment—family reunited, life saved, hope restored.

For me, it was a reminder of why I was doing all this. Not for personal power or glory, but for moments like this. For the possibility of eliminating unnecessary suffering.

"Dr. Thorne," Sarah said, approaching me. "How can I thank you? You gave me my life back."

"Use this life well," I replied. "Help others when you can. That is gratitude enough."

It was advice she would take to heart, she would later discover. Sarah Chen would become one of academia's most vocal advocates, dedicating her life to medical advocacy.

"Kai," Katharina said, still looking at data, "this will change medicine forever. If you can cure leukemia in minutes... cancer, Alzheimer's, spinal cord injuries..."

"That's the plan," I confirmed. "We'll start with the most urgent cases and gradually expand."

"How many people can you treat?" Markus asked.

How many people? With current resources, probably every terminally ill person on Earth, if necessary. But he couldn't reveal that capacity yet.

"We'll start slowly," he said. "One or two people a week initially. I want to make sure there are no unforeseen side effects."

It was an artificial limitation, but a necessary one. If he started curing everyone immediately, it would cause massive social disruption.

"David," he said, "I want you to document Sarah's recovery over the next few weeks. Any changes, any unusual sensations, anything. It will be valuable data for future treatments."

"Of course," he replied eagerly. "What about my training? Can I still learn?"

"More than before," I confirmed. "Now that your sister is safe, you can focus completely on developing your own capabilities."

It was true. David, without the distraction of a dying sister, would be a much better student.

Katharina was still processing the implications. "Kai, this demonstration will be seen by millions. Irrefutable proof that you can... cure the impossible."

"That's why we recorded it," I replied. "Full transparency."

"But it will also result in... my God, how many people will come to us now? How many desperate families?"

It was a valid concern. Public demonstration of miraculous healing would create demand that would be impossible to meet with the artificial limitations he was imposing.

"That's why we need the academy operational quickly," he said. "To train others who can help."

It was half true. Academia would primarily be about preparing humans for cosmic threats. Medical applications were a side benefit, not a primary goal.

Markus was reviewing footage. "Kai, this is going to break the internet. Documented cure of terminal cancer in three minutes, in a controlled environment, with full medical monitoring."

"Good," I replied. "The more people who understand that this is real, the more support we will have for the academy."

Sarah was testing the limits of her reconstructed body - bouncing slightly, testing flexibility, marveling at the feeling of limitless energy.

"It's like having superpowers," she said, laughing. "I feel like I could run a marathon."

"It probably can," I replied. Optimizations I'd made to her biological systems put her well beyond normal human performance.

"Dr. Thorne," David said, his approach becoming more serious, "I want to dedicate my life to this. To learning its capabilities and helping other families like ours."

"That's exactly what I expected to hear," I confirmed.

It was true. David would be one of the first humans to train for advanced capabilities. Not just because he asked, but because his experience with despair and gratitude would make him a passionate advocate for the responsible use of technology.

"When do we start?" he asked.

"Tomorrow," I replied. "8 o'clock sharp. And David? This will be harder than you think. Developing these skills requires total dedication."

"I understand," he said determinedly. "I will do whatever is necessary."

Katharina was still looking at medical readings. "Kai, I have to ask - are there limitations to what you can cure? Conditions that are too advanced, or..."

"I haven't discovered any limitations yet," I replied honestly. It was true—technology seemed capable of correcting any biological malfunction.

"What about... enhancement? Could you enhance humans beyond normal parameters?"

It was a dangerous question. Enhancement capabilities existed, but revealing them would create massive moral and political complications.

"Initial focus is purely medical," I replied carefully. "Restoring normal health, not enhancing beyond human baseline."

It was a limitation that would be imposed for now. Improvement would come later, when humans were ready for implications.

"Wise approach," Markus agreed. "Public acceptance would be much easier if we focused on helping the sick instead of creating superhumans."

Sarah was now pacing around the room, clearly thrilled with her energy levels. "David, remember when we used to play basketball before I got sick? I think I can beat you now."

David laughed. "You probably can. You've always been more athletic."

It was a moment of ordinary interaction between siblings, but full of meaning. Sarah had a future again. Goals, dreams, possibilities that had been stolen by illness and now restored.

"Dr. Thorne," she said, turning to me, "may I make a suggestion?"

"Of course."

"When you establish a gym, make sure to include families in the process. David was affected by my illness as much as I was. He needs healing too, just a different kind."

It was insightful. Families of patients suffered significant trauma as well. Holistic approach to healing would be important.

"Noted," he said. "Academy will include support for entire families, not just patients."

Katharina was organizing equipment. "Kai, we'll need to prepare for a media storm. When this footage goes public..."

"Tomorrow," I decided. "Gives us day to prepare statements and protocols."

It was a timeline that would allow careful control of message. The story needed to be about hope and possibility, not about revolutionary technology that transcended human understanding.

"And security?" Markus asked. "There's going to be a lot of attention..."

Security. Inner Fun - After surviving interdimensional war, concern about human-level security threats seemed peculiar.

"We will approach as necessary," I replied. "For now, standard protocols are sufficient."

David and Sarah were getting ready to leave, both clearly emotional about the morning's events.

"Dr. Thorne," David said, shaking my hand, "not just thank you. Thank you for giving me back my sister and the opportunity to make a difference for others."

"Use both wisely," I replied.

"And Dr. Thorne?" Sarah added. "Whatever you're planning with the gym, count on me to support you. Anything I can do to help, just ask."

It was an offer I might eventually accept. Sarah as a living testament to healing abilities would be a powerful advocacy tool.

After they left, the room fell into contemplative silence. Katharina, Markus, and I stood among medical equipment that had documented something that would fundamentally change human civilization.

"Kai," Katharina finally said, "do you realize that you have just done something that will be remembered for thousands of years?"

Thousands of years. If only she knew what time scales she was thinking of for human development.

"This is the beginning," I confirmed. "Everything changes from here."

It was a massive underestimation. From her perspective, it was the beginning of a medical revolution. From my perspective, it was the first step in preparing humanity for cosmic challenges that could emerge at any moment.

"Are you scared?" Markus asked quietly.

Afraid? After facing entities that could erase dimensions, after witnessing the destruction of civilizations, after experiencing death thousands of times?

"No," I answered honestly. "Determined."

It was true. Fear had been burned from me through tribulations that transcended human experience. Only determination remained—determination to see humanity safely through the transitions ahead.

"Good," Katharina said. "Because I think we're going to need that determination more than anything else."

I looked out the window at the campus where life continued as normal, students walking to classes where they would learn about the universe that was a tiny fraction of reality.

Soon, everything would begin to change for them. Medical miracles would be just the first step. Eventually, they would need to learn about the cosmos that existed beyond their imagination.

But for now, it was enough that a family had been healed and a young man had committed himself to learning skills that could eventually save his species.

It was a good start.

It was the beginning of a transformation that would define the future of human civilization.

And it was only day one.

I left the laboratory with a feeling of profound satisfaction. The first official medical case had not only been a success, but a perfect demonstration of what I wanted to show the world: the ability to cure the impossible in a controlled, documented, verifiable way.

The walk across campus to my office took about twelve minutes. Twelve minutes that, I would discover, were enough to change the world.

Katharina had worked with impressive efficiency. By the time I left the lab, she was already uploading the video to multiple platforms simultaneously: YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, even Facebook. Each post had a carefully crafted description:

"DOCUMENTED: Complete cure of terminal leukemia in 3 minutes. Controlled medical environment. Full monitoring. Dr. Kai Thorne demonstrates healing capabilities that could revolutionize global medicine. #MiracleCure #RevolutionaryMedicine #KaiThorne #Academy"

By the time I got to my office, my phone was already blowing up.

Literally exploding. Notifications coming in so fast that the screen was constantly flickering. WhatsApp, Telegram, email, missed calls, Twitter mentions - a torrent of global attention focused on me simultaneously.

I sat down in my chair and opened my laptop. YouTube's views were rising in real time: 15,000... 23,000... 41,000... 67,000... It was climbing exponentially.

Comments appeared faster than I could read:

"IS THIS REAL????? How is this possible???"

"Fake footage, has to be CGI"

"My God, if this is true, it has changed everything"

"WHERE CAN I REGISTER MY MOTHER HAS CANCER PLEASE HELP"

"The girl's family confirmed that she did indeed have leukemia, it's in the medical records"

"FAKE NEWS FAKE NEWS FAKE NEWS"

"I just saw an interview with her doctor, he confirms that she was dying yesterday"

"China will want to steal this technology"

"US must protect Dr. Thorne at all costs"

"Brazil should offer territory for academia!"

Twitter was even more chaotic. #KaiThorne had become a worldwide trending topic in a matter of minutes, along with #MiracleCure, #LeukemiaCured, and #MagicAcademy.

Politicians began responding almost immediately:

@PresidenciaEUA: "The United States is committed to supporting Dr. Thorne and ensuring that groundbreaking medical discoveries benefit all of humanity."

@EmmanuelMacron: "France offers full support to Dr. Thorne's academy. Science without borders for the future of humanity."

@KremlinRussia_P: "Russia has always been a leader in scientific advancement. We welcome collaboration with Dr. Thorne."

More interesting were the responses from the Chinese representatives:

@ChinaEmbassyUSA: "China congratulates Dr. Thorne on medical breakthrough. Our nation's resources and expertise are available for international cooperation."

@XiJinpingReal: "Chinese people celebrate advancement of human medical capabilities. China stands ready to provide comprehensive support to Dr. Thorne Academy."

China. Interesting.

I opened a new tab and started looking through the formal offers I had received in recent weeks. There were piles of documents from several countries, but the Chinese proposal stood out for its... ambition.

I found the document: "Proposal by the People's Republic of China for the Establishment of the Kai Thorne International Academy."

I reread with renewed attention:

Territory Offered:50 square kilometers of prime land in Guangdong Province, near Shenzhen. Special economic zone status with full administrative autonomy.

Initial Financing:$5 billion US, no strings attached, plus $2 billion annually for operations.

Infrastructure:Complete construction of a campus designed specifically for academia, including research hospitals, dormitories, laboratories, auditoriums, and an international conference center.

Protection:State-level security, but with guarantees of academic and scientific independence.

Access:Visa facilitation for international students and researchers, fast-track process for Chinese citizenship if desired.

Technological Partnership:Full access to China's research infrastructure, including the world's most advanced supercomputers.

Timeline:Complete campus in 8 months.

It was an impressive offer. More importantly, China had a proven track record of executing massive infrastructure projects on impossible timelines.

I sought the contact of the Chinese representative mentioned in the proposal: Dr. Li Wei, Special Minister for International Scientific Cooperation.

I found his direct number easily - it was listed in all official communications. The man clearly wanted to be contacted.

I dialed.

He answered on the second ring.

"Dr. Thorne?" the voice was cultured, impeccable English with a slight accent. "Is that really you?"

"Dr. Li Wei, presumo?"

"Yes! Dr. Thorne, it is a tremendous honor to speak with you directly. I just saw video of your miraculous healing. It's... it's beyond remarkable."

"Thank you. Dr. Li, I am reviewing proposals for the location of the academy. The Chinese proposal is... intriguing."

"Ah!" he could hear genuine enthusiasm in her voice. "Dr. Thorne, I can assure you that China is 100% committed to making the academy a reality. Not just committed—enthusiastic."

"Elaborate on administrative autonomy. How would this work in practice?"

"Complete academic freedom," he responded immediately. "Academia would operate under an international charter, with independent governance. China would provide resources and protection, but zero interference in academic decisions or curriculum."

"What about international access? Students from all countries?"

"Absolutely. In fact, we prefer that. An academy with students from all nations would demonstrate China's commitment to global cooperation. Very important for our international reputation."

Interesting. China was positioning this as a soft power opportunity.

"Dr. Li, I need to be frank. Academia will attract attention - both positive and negative. Some countries may see China's partnership as a threat."

"Understandable concern," he replied thoughtfully. "But consider: China has a stable government, advanced infrastructure, and a proven ability to execute large-scale projects. Most importantly, Chinese culture values education and academic achievement above almost everything else."

It was a valid argument. China did indeed have the best track record for construction projects and infrastructure development.

"Is the timeline realistic? Full campus in 8 months?"

"Dr. Thorne, you do not understand the scale of China's construction capabilities. If necessary, we can have thousands of workers on site within days. For a project of this magnitude, the Chinese government would mobilize resources that other countries cannot match."

"And the exact location? Guangdong Province?"

"Prime location. Next to Shenzhen - one of the most advanced tech cities in the world. Access to Hong Kong International Airport - 45 minutes. Proximity to Beijing - 2 hours by high-speed train. Plus, the weather is excellent all year round."

It was starting to sound very appealing.

"Dr. Li, what about research partnerships? Access to Chinese scientific institutions?"

"Full access," he said eagerly. "Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Peking University, all the major research centers. Dr. Thorne, China has invested billions in scientific research for decades. You would have access to resources that simply don't exist elsewhere."

"What about intellectual property? Rights to discoveries made in academia?"

"Academia retains all IP rights. China wants partnership, not ownership. Our benefit comes from being the location for breakthrough research and medical applications that help the Chinese people."

These were surprisingly generous terms.

"Dr. Li, what's the catch? Such generous offers often have hidden costs."

Long pause. Then: "Dr. Thorne, can I be completely honest?"

"Please."

"China sees academia as an opportunity to demonstrate that we are a responsible global power, not a threat. To have a top-tier international institution choosing China as its home... that sends a powerful message to the world. It is worth much more than money to the Chinese leadership."

Geopolitical positioning. It made sense.

"What if relations between China and other countries deteriorate? What happens to academia?"

"Academia remains neutral territory," he assured. "International charter protects against political interference. Besides, Dr. Thorne, disturbing an academy that provides medical miracles would be political suicide for any government."

Valid point. Medical advances transcended political boundaries.

"Dr. Li, assuming I'm interested, what would be the next steps?"

"I can arrange a virtual tour of the proposed site tomorrow. Plus video conferences with architectural teams, security experts, administrative coordinators. You could see the exact facilities being proposed."

"And timeline for decision?"

"Obviously your decision, Dr. Thorne. But construction crews can begin preparing immediately. The longer the delay, the longer it will take until the gym is operational."

It was subtle pressure, but practical truth.

"Dr. Li, one more question. How do the Chinese public feel about hosting the academy?"

"Oh, tremendous enthusiasm! Chinese people deeply respect education and scientific achievement. Having Dr. Thorne's Academy in China would be a source of immense national pride."

I could hear sincerity in his voice.

"Dr. Li, please arrange the tour for tomorrow afternoon. 2pm my time."

"Excellent! Dr. Thorne, you won't regret considering China. We will provide everything necessary for the academy's success."

"One condition, Dr. Li. Full transparency about challenges, not just benefits. I need to understand potential problems."

"Of course. Complete honesty in all discussions."

"Good. We'll talk tomorrow."

"Dr. Thorne, before you hang up - may I just say what an honor it is to even be considered? What you have demonstrated today... gives hope to millions of families dealing with medical challenges."

It was a genuine feeling that touched me unexpectedly.

"Thank you, Dr. Li. This is exactly why the academy needs to exist."

After hanging up, I sat back in my chair and contemplated the conversation. China was clearly the most serious candidate to host the academy. Resources, timeline, enthusiasm—all impressive.

More importantly, the geopolitical implications worked in my favor. China hosting an international academy focused on medical applications would be a huge soft power win for them, which meant they would be invested in the academy's success.

My phone buzzed with a text from Katharina: "Kai, video has hit 2 MILLION views in 45 minutes. International news stations calling nonstop. Chinese Embassy has sent formal invitation for you to visit Beijing 'at your earliest convenience.'"

2 million views in 45 minutes. Sarah's healing had clearly resonated globally.

Another text: "Also, White House called. President wants to speak with you in person tomorrow."

President. Interesting. It was escalating to government level much faster than expected.

But China remained the most attractive option. Resources, capabilities, and political motivation aligned perfectly with what the academy needed.

I opened my laptop and began researching Guangdong province in detail. Climate, infrastructure, local politics, international accessibility. The more I learned, the more appealing it became.

My phone rang. International number.

"Dr. Thorne? This is Ambassador Sarah Chen from the Chinese Embassy in Washington. Dr. Li Wei asked me to follow up on discussions at the academy."

"Ambassador Chen, yes, I just spoke with Dr. Li."

"Wonderful! Dr. Thorne, I have been authorized to extend a formal invitation for you to visit the proposed location in person. Private jet, full accommodations, full tour of the facilities and surrounding area."

"Timeline?"

"Your convenience. Tomorrow if you prefer, or any day this week."

It was moving fast. But fast could be good - momentum was building globally, and striking while the iron was hot made strategic sense.

"Let me consider it and get back to you tomorrow."

"Of course. Dr. Thorne, I might as well mention - Prime Minister Xi personally reviewed your medical demonstration. He was... deeply touched. China is committed to making academia a reality."

Premier Xi personally involved. This suggested serious commitment at the highest levels.

"Thanks for letting me know. We'll talk tomorrow."

After the call ended, I stood up and walked to the window overlooking the campus. Students were still walking around, attending classes, living normal lives. They had no idea that their world was about to fundamentally change.

And the choice of location for the academy would be crucial to how this change would happen. China offered resources and capabilities that could make the academy a reality faster than anywhere else.

But it also represented a commitment to a specific geopolitical alliance that would affect the academy's international relations for decades.

Decisions, decisions.

But one thing was clear: momentum was building, internationally and domestically. Video of Sarah's healing had provided proof that could not be denied.

Time to make academia a reality, not just a promise.

And China seemed like the best way to make that happen.

My phone vibrated again. Markus: "Kai, CNN wants exclusive interview tomorrow. BBC called. Fox News offering massive sum for first appearance on American TV. International pressure is huge."

Pressure. From all directions. Countries competing to host the academy. Media demanding access. Public expecting miracles.

Time to step up and deliver.

Starting with location decision.

And increasingly, that decision pointed to China.

I looked at Markus's message again. Fox News offering "massive sum" for first US TV appearance. CNN wanting exclusive. BBC calling.

It was the perfect time for the strategy I had been formulating.

I called Markus.

"Markus, about the media offers..."

"Kai! The pressure is insane. Fox News has raised its offer to $2 million for an hour of exclusive interviews. CNN has offered $1.5 million plus prime time. BBC wants full documentary deal."

$2 million for an hour. It was a ridiculous amount for an interview, but it demonstrated the networks' desperation for exclusive access.

"Markus, accept Fox News."

"Seriously? Not CNN or BBC? Fox News is more... polarizing."

That's exactly why I wanted Fox News. Largest American conservative audience, widest political reach, and perfect timing for what I had in mind.

"Fox News has the highest audience in the demographics that matter for political pressure," I explained. "Plus, Tucker Carlson has the most-watched show on American television."

"Do you want to go on Tucker Carlson Tonight?"

"Exactly. Markus, arrange for an interview tonight if possible. Tell him it's an urgent announcement about the location of the academy that will affect American interests."

"Tonight? Kai, that's only 6 o'clock..."

"Perfect timing. Momentum is at its peak, global attention is focused, and I need to strike while the iron is hot."

"Okay... and what are you going to announce?"

It was time to reveal my strategy.

"I will announce that I am accepting bids for the location of the gym until midnight tomorrow. Public bidding war between countries. Best bid wins."

Silence on the other side.

"Kai... that's... brilliant. And completely insane."

"Best strategies are usually both. Markus, contact Fox News now. Tell them Dr. Kai Thorne is ready for an exclusive announcement that will change international policy. Tonight only."

"I'll be right there. But Kai, you'll need talking points, preparation..."

"Send me the address of the Fox News studio. I'll be there at 7:00 p.m."

"That's in 5 hours!"

"Enough time. Markus, also contact all international embassies that have offered partnership. Tell them to tune in tonight for an important announcement."

"Jesus, Kai. You're about to start an international bidding war on live television."

"Exactly."

I hung up and immediately began strategizing. Fox News' audience was primarily American conservative, which meant that anything I said would be interpreted through the lens of American interests. If I positioned this correctly, I could generate massive domestic pressure on the American government to improve its offering.

Simultaneously, knowing that international representatives would be watching, statements about offers from other countries would be heard globally. China, Europe, Russia—they would all be monitoring American television to see how I would shape the situation.

It was a multi-layered strategy that could dramatically increase resources available to academia while positioning myself as a neutral party simply seeking a better deal for humanity.

My phone rang. Katharina.

"Kai, did you hear from Markus that you're going on Fox News tonight?"

"Correct. I need you to prepare a comprehensive dossier of all offers received - financial, territorial, infrastructure, schedule, everything. I want a complete comparison ready in 2 hours."

"Kai, this is a huge decision. Making the bidding process public will..."

"It will change everything. Exactly what I want. Katharina, I also need you to monitor international social media reactions in real time during the interview. I want to know how different countries are responding."

"Understood. Kai... are you sure about this approach? Once you announce public bidding, there's no turning back."

"There is no going back anyway. Academia will happen. The question is just where and with what resources. Better to maximize both."

"Okay. I'll have everything ready."

Next call: Dr. Li Wei.

"Dr. Thorne! So good to hear from you again."

"Dr. Li, quick question. Are Chinese authorities monitoring American television tonight?"

"Why do you ask?"

"Because I'm going on Fox News at 8:00 PM ET to make an announcement about the location of the academy. I thought China might want to... pay attention."

Long pause. "What kind of announcement?"

"Public bidding process for the location of the gym. Best offer wins. Deadline midnight tomorrow."

"You're... putting the gym's location up for competitive bidding? On live American television?"

"Best way to ensure that academia receives the resources it deserves. Competition breeds excellence, right?"

"Dr. Thorne, this is... unprecedented. But very smart. China will be ready to compete."

"Good. Tune in tonight."

I called Ambassador Chen next.

"Ambassador Chen, Dr. Thorne here. Quick heads up - making announcement tonight on Fox News regarding academy location process. Might want to have political team on standby."

"What kind of ad?"

"Competitive bidding. Best bid wins. I thought China might want to prepare an updated proposal."

"Dr. Thorne, are you essentially auctioning off the gym's location to the highest bidder?"

"I am ensuring that academia receives maximum resources to serve humanity. If that means competitive process, so be it."

"Understood. We'll be watching."

Next: White House.

"White House Communications Office, this is Sarah."

"This is Dr. Kai Thorne. I need to speak to someone about appearing on Fox News tonight."

"Dr. Thorne! Please wait, I will connect you immediately."

A brief wait, then: "Dr. Thorne, this is Chief of Staff Morrison. The President wanted to speak with you tomorrow."

"On that note - I'm making an announcement tonight on Fox News that may affect those discussions."

"What kind of ad?"

"Location of academy will be determined through competitive bidding process. International competition. Deadline tomorrow midnight."

"You're putting your gym location up for auction? On Fox News?"

"I am ensuring that the academy receives the best possible resources through a competitive process. I thought that the administration might want to prepare a competitive offer."

"Dr. Thorne, this changes everything. I need to brief the President immediately."

"You have 6 hours. Good luck."

I hung up and felt a rush of adrenaline. Over the next six hours, I had set in motion a process that would force every major country to bid competitively for the location of the academy. The resources the academy would receive would be far beyond anything it could have negotiated individually.

Furthermore, the public nature of the process meant that no country could make secret deals or politically problematic arrangements. Everything would be transparent, competitive, and focused purely on the needs of academia.

My phone started ringing immediately. International numbers, embassy officials, government representatives.

I let it play. Everyone would be watching tonight.

I spent the next hour coming up with talking points for the interview:

OPENING STATEMENT:

"The academy represents an unprecedented opportunity for medical advancement that could save millions of lives. It deserves a location that can provide maximum resources, security, and international access."

COMPETITIVE PROCESS:

"Rather than choosing based on political considerations, the location of the academy will be determined by which country offers the best combination of resources, infrastructure, autonomy, and commitment to international cooperation."

CRITERIA:

"Territory, funding, timeline, research partnerships, student access, security, and most importantly - ensuring academic independence."

TIMELINE:

"All countries have until midnight tomorrow to submit their best offers. Decision announced within 48 hours."

AMERICAN ANGLE:

"America has tremendous advantages - technological infrastructure, academic excellence, diverse population. But other countries are offering very competitive packages. Competition will be fierce."

It was carefully crafted to generate urgency in American viewers while signaling to international audiences that it was serious about the competitive process.

Katharina arrived with the dossier at 4 pm.

"Kai, comprehensive analysis of all offers received. Current leader is China by a significant margin, but several countries could potentially compete if they increased commitments."

I quickly reviewed the document. China: $5 billion initial, 50 km² territory, 8 month timeline. US: $1 billion initial, smaller territory, 18 month timeline. EU consortium: $2 billion initial, distributed locations, 12 month timeline. Russia: $3 billion initial, remote territory, unknown timeline.

"China clearly has the most attractive current offer," I noted.

"But imagine if other countries decided to compete seriously. If the US matched China's offer..."

"Academy would have resources beyond anything originally imagined. Exactly what I hope for."

"Kai, I also analyzed social media trends. #LicitacaoAcademia is already trending internationally. Countries are taking this very seriously."

"Good. Pressure is building exactly as planned."

At 5pm, I got a call from Fox News.

"Dr. Thorne, this is Executive Producer Janet Mills. Thrilled to have you tonight. Tucker is extremely excited to interview."

"Excellent. A few requirements: I need a full hour, no commercial interruptions during key segments, and I control the pace of the ad."

"Understood. Dr. Thorne, can you give us a preview of the announcement? For promotional purposes?"

"The location of the academy will be determined through competitive international bidding. Countries have until midnight tomorrow to submit bids. Best bid wins."

"Holy... Dr. Thorne, this is huge news. We will promote it heavily."

"Good. I want maximum ratings."

"It will. Tucker Carlson Tonight gets 4-5 million viewers. More international audience streaming online."

5 million viewers plus international streaming. Perfect reach for what I had in mind.

At 6pm, I started receiving texts from international contacts:

Dr. Li Wei: "China preparing improved offer for tonight. Will exceed all competition."

Ambassador Chen: "Premier Xi personally reviewing updated proposal."

French Embassy: "France mobilizing resources for competitive offer."

German Embassy: "EU called emergency session to discuss academy's response."

Russian Embassy: "Federation ready to substantially increase engagement."

White House: "President scheduling emergency Cabinet meeting."

It was working exactly as planned. A single ad on Fox News had triggered an international scramble to locate the gym.

I drove to Fox News studios at 6:30 p.m. The building was bustling with activity—production crews, extra security, promotional banners being hung.

"Dr. Thorne!" Tucker Carlson approached as I arrived. "This is incredible. Most anticipated interview we've ever done."

"Tucker, I appreciate the opportunity. Ready to make history tonight?"

"Absolutely. Dr. Thorne, between you and me - is the location of this gym actually available?"

"Tucker, the academy goes to whoever offers the best combination of resources and commitment. No political favoritism, no secret deals. Pure competition."

"And are countries really competing against each other?"

"By tomorrow night, you will see offerings that exceed anything anyone has imagined. Competition breeds excellence."

"This is going to be amazing television."

At 7:45 p.m., I began final preparation. Makeup, microphone testing, reviewing key points. I could feel the energy building—the production team knew they were about to deliver something significant.

"Dr. Thorne," Producer Mills approached, "viewership metrics showing massive audience tuning in. International streaming numbers are unprecedented."

"Perfect. Ready to get started?"

"Tucker opens in 3 minutes. You're introduced after commercial break."

I sat in the green room watching the opening segment. Tucker was doing a promo:

"Tonight, an exclusive interview with Dr. Kai Thorne, the genius behind the medical miracle that has the world talking. But Dr. Thorne isn't here just to discuss his discovery - he's here to make an announcement that could reshape international relations. An academy that could revolutionize medicine is on the horizon, and countries are about to compete against each other to host it. You won't want to miss it."

Commercial break. Producer took me to the studio.

"Dr. Thorne," Tucker said during final sound check, "ready to change the world?"

"Ready to give the world the opportunity to support medical advancement that could save millions."

"And action!"

Tucker turned to the camera. "Good evening and welcome to Tucker Carlson Tonight. I'm with Dr. Kai Thorne, the man whose medical breakthrough has captivated the world. Dr. Thorne, thank you for being here."

"Thanks, Tucker. Nice to be here."

"Dr. Thorne, let's start with the obvious question. Video of you curing terminal cancer in minutes has been seen by millions. Is this real?"

"Completely real, Tucker. Documented in a controlled medical environment, verified by multiple doctors, witnessed by international observers. Sarah Chen was dying of leukemia. Today she is completely healthy."

"How is this possible?"

"Without getting too technical, it involves interfacing with biological systems at a fundamental level. Correcting cellular patterns that cause disease."

"And can you teach this to other people?"

"That's exactly why I'm here tonight, Tucker. To announce an academy that will train people in these skills. An academy that could revolutionize medicine, end suffering for millions of families."

"And where will this academy be located?"

Moment of truth.

"Tucker, that's what I'm here to announce. The location of the gym will be determined through a competitive process. Countries around the world have until midnight tomorrow to submit their best offers. Best offer wins."

"Are you essentially auctioning off the gym's location to the highest bidder?"

"I'm making sure that the academy gets the resources it deserves through a transparent, competitive process. Tucker, we're talking about an institution that could end cancer, cure paralysis, cure impossible diseases. It deserves a location that can provide maximum support."

"What kind of offers are you getting?"

"Substantial, Tucker. Billions in funding, massive territories, research partnerships, security guarantees. Countries understand that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

"What about America? Should American viewers be worried that the academy might go somewhere else?"

"America has tremendous advantages, Tucker. Best technology in the world, academic excellence, diverse population. But other countries are making very attractive offers. Competition will be fierce."

"Can you give specifics on what you are looking for?"

"Five key criteria: Sufficient land for a comprehensive campus. Adequate funding for operations and research. Timeline for rapid construction. Research partnerships with existing institutions. And most importantly - assurance of complete academic independence."

"Academic independence?"

"Academia should be free to pursue medical advancement without political interference. Whoever hosts an academy receives prestige and economic benefits, but does not control academic decisions."

"And you're giving countries until midnight tomorrow?"

"Correct. Every country has an equal opportunity to make its best offer. No favoritism, no secret negotiations. Pure competition for the benefit of academia."

"Dr. Thorne, this seems unprecedented. An international bidding war for an academic institution?"

"Tucker, this is no ordinary academic institution. This is the academy that could eliminate most diseases known to mankind. It's worth the competitive process to ensure it receives the best possible funding."

"What happens after tomorrow night?"

"I will review all offers, make a decision based purely on the gym's needs, and announce location within 48 hours. Construction begins immediately."

"What about Americans who want to be part of academia?"

"The academy will be international. Students from all countries, including America, will be welcome regardless of where it is located. But Tucker, American citizens deserve to have the academy located where it can best serve them. That may mean America needs to make a competitive offer."

"Message to American leadership?"

"The academy represents an opportunity for America to lead the next phase of medical advancement. But leadership requires commitment. Other countries are making substantial commitments. America should consider doing the same."

"Dr. Thorne, final question. Are you confident that this academy will revolutionize medicine?"

"Tucker, in the next decade, graduates of the academy will eliminate diseases that have plagued humanity for centuries. We will cure cancer, reverse paralysis, eradicate genetic disorders. But only if the academy is given the resources it needs to succeed."

"Dr. Thorne, thank you for this exclusive announcement. That was remarkable."

"Thanks, Tucker."

"When we return, we will review Dr. Thorne's announcement with our panel of experts."

Commercial break.

"Dr. Thorne," Tucker said off-air, "that was amazing. You just shot international competition on live television."

My phone was already buzzing with notifications. Hundreds of missed calls, thousands of messages.

"Tucker, this is just the beginning. By tomorrow night, the academy will have resources beyond anything originally imagined."

"America better step forward."

"Every country is better off stepping forward. Academia will go to whoever offers the best support for medical advancement that could save millions of lives."

I left the studio feeling satisfied with a perfectly executed strategy. A single television appearance had transformed the location of the bilateral negotiations academy into an international competition.

By midnight tomorrow, I would have offers that exceeded anything I could have negotiated individually.

And the academy would have adequate resources for its true mission: preparing humanity for the cosmic challenges ahead.

Perfect start to the next phase of the operation.

Now to see how many countries were actually willing to invest in what they thought was a medical revolution.

I drove back to my office with a sense of intense anticipation. I had planted a seed that would now germinate into a live international competition. But I had not anticipated that Fox News would turn it into a television event.

When I arrived at MIT at 9:30 p.m., I found Katharina and Markus in the office, multiple screens open, expressions of complete astonishment.

"Kai!" Katharina stood up immediately. "You have to see this. Fox News has gotten exclusive rights to broadcast live offers!"

"Like this?"

Markus pointed to the main screen. "After your interview, Tucker announced that Fox News had negotiated a deal with you for exclusive coverage of the entire bidding process. They're calling it 'Academy Auction: Battle for the Future of Medicine.'"

I looked at the screen. It was a special studio that Fox had set up in record time - a huge table with world maps, screens showing real-time offers, a panel of experts, and a ticker at the bottom showing constant updates.

"I didn't negotiate anything with them," he said.

"Apparently they took over the rights based on the exclusivity of the interview," Katharina explained. "And since you didn't specify how offers would be received publicly..."

"They have created their own platform," Markus added. "Countries are submitting bids directly to Fox News, which is broadcasting everything live to the world."

It was... brilliant. And completely out of my control.

On screen, Tucker was back with a panel of experts:

"Welcome back to Fox News' special coverage, 'Academy Auction.' I'm Tucker Carlson, and we're witnessing something unprecedented - countries around the world competing live on air to host a medical academy that could change human history."

Camera shifted to show international correspondent.

"Tucker, in the last two hours since Dr. Thorne's announcement, we've received formal offers from seventeen countries. And they're... impressive."

"Let's go to the current offers," Tucker said. The screen changed to show a table:

"My God," I muttered. "China has increased it to $8 billion."

"And look at this," Katharina pointed to the ticker at the bottom of the screen: "BREAKING: France announces EU will increase offer. Germany mobilizing additional resources. UK considering independent offer post-Brexit."

Tucker was interviewing an international relations expert.

"Professor Williams, why do you think we are seeing such intense competition?"

"Tucker, this transcends normal politics. Academia represents an opportunity to host an institution that could literally cure cancer, Alzheimer's, paralysis. The country that hosts this becomes a global center for advanced medicine. The geopolitical prestige is immense."

"And economically?"

"Tucker, we're talking about a potential trillion-dollar industry. Medical tourism, pharmaceutical research, medical technology. Host country would become a global leader in medicine for decades."

My phone rang. International number.

"Dr. Thorne, this is Minister Chen from the Chinese Embassy. Have you seen our updated offer?"

"I see it now. $8 billion is... substantial."

"Dr. Thorne, China is fully committed. But I must warn you - Premier Xi has authorized us to increase supply as needed. China will not be outdone."

"Understood."

"And Dr. Thorne? Our engineers have confirmed - 6 months to full campus. We will mobilize 50,000 workers if necessary."

I hung up and immediately got another call.

"Dr. Thorne, this is the US Secretary of State. I need to inform you that the President has authorized a significant increase in our offer."

"What kind of raise?"

"Details to follow in minutes. But Dr. Thorne, America will not allow the academy to go to another country. Unlimited resources are available."

On the screen, Tucker was announcing the update:

"We just received an updated offer from the United States!"

New table appeared:

UPDATED OFFER - USA - 10:15pm EST

Funding: $10 billion initial + $4 billion annual

Territory: 100 km² in Texas + special federal zone status

Timeline: Full Campus in 8 months

Extras: Dedicated military budget, access to classified technology

ADDITIONAL: Immediate US Citizenship for Dr. Thorne + Presidential Protection

"The United States just made its most aggressive offer yet!" Tucker announced. "Ten billion dollars upfront, U.S. citizenship for Dr. Thorne, and presidential-level protection!"

Panel of experts exploded into discussion.

"This is a clear statement that America views academia as a matter of national security," one analyst noted.

"Offering citizenship and presidential protection is unprecedented," another added.

My phone exploded with calls. China, France, Germany, Russia - all reacting to the American escalation.

"Dr. Thorne," Dr. Li Wei's familiar voice, "China will respond within the hour. Our offer will surpass any competition."

On screen, an international correspondent was reporting:

"Tucker, situation is escalating rapidly. Sources in Beijing confirm emergency Politburo meeting. French president cancels trip to coordinate European response. Kremlin activates special economic protocols."

"It's a full-on bidding war," Tucker noted.

Katharina was monitoring social media. "Kai, this is trending in every country. #LeilaoAcademia is number one worldwide. People are watching as if it were the World Cup."

"What kind of reactions?"

"Mixed. Americans proud that the country is 'fighting' for academia. Chinese confident that they will offer more. Europeans promoting international cooperation. Russians... well, being Russians."

On the screen, Tucker was receiving a live update:

"We just received... this is extraordinary. The European Union has just announced a joint offer that includes ALL 27 member countries."

UPDATED OFFER - EUROPEAN UNION - 22:45 EST

Funding: $12 billion initial + $5 billion annual

Territory: Multi-national campus with centers in 5 countries

Timeline: Full Campus in 7 months

Extras: Access to all European research + pipeline of refugees/migrants for studies

ADDITIONAL: European citizenship + residence in any member country

"The European Union just raised its stake to twelve billion!" Tucker announced. "And they're offering European citizenship plus access to 27 countries!"

I was climbing beyond anything I had imagined.

Markus was documenting everything. "Kai, in the three hours since your interview, bids have gone from about $5 billion total to over $12 billion. And we still have 25 hours until deadline."

"And other countries?"

"Canada just put in $6 billion. Australia offering an entire island. Brazil promising access to the Amazon for biological research. India mobilizing its technology sector."

On screen, Tucker was interviewing an economist:

"Dr. Rodriguez, are these offerings economically sustainable?"

"Tucker, we're talking about investing in the future of human medicine. If academia delivers on its promises, the economic returns would be trillions over decades. Countries are treating this as the investment of the century."

"And geopolitically?"

"It's redefining global alliances in real time. Countries are essentially betting their future international relationships on this competition."

At 11:15 pm, we received a call that changed everything.

"Dr. Thorne, this is the Chinese ambassador to the US. Premier Xi has asked me to personally communicate that China will make a final offer that will end the competition."

"What kind of offer?"

"Details in minutes. But Dr. Thorne, China is prepared to offer capabilities that transcend anything other countries can match."

On the screen, Tucker was receiving breaking news:

"We have just received an official statement from Beijing. China will make a 'final and definitive offer' within the hour. Sources close to the Chinese government suggest it will be 'beyond all expectations.'"

Audiences were absolutely captivated. Viewership figures showed 12 million Americans watching, plus 50+ million globally via streaming.

"Kai," Katharina said, "this has become the most-watched event in Fox News history. And we haven't even gotten to China's final offer yet."

At 11:45 p.m., Tucker did a dramatic countdown:

"Fifteen minutes until China's final offer. Remember that the deadline for all offers is midnight tomorrow - still 24 hours. But sources suggest that the Chinese offer will be so substantial that it could end the competition today."

My phone rang. Dr. Li Wei.

"Dr. Thorne, are you watching?"

"Try."

"Get ready. China will make an offer that will demonstrate our absolute commitment to the success of the academy."

At 11:58 p.m., Tucker made the announcement:

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have just received a final offer from the People's Republic of China for Dr. Thorne Academy."

Screen changed to show official document with Chinese government seal:

Tucker was silent for a moment before speaking:

"That's... that's twenty billion dollars up front. Two hundred and twenty billion over twenty-five years. Ministerial status for Dr. Thorne. Waiver of medical patents. That's more than most national budgets."

Panel of experts was astonished.

"I have never seen a government bid of this magnitude for a civil project," one economist said.

"China has just bet significant economic value on Dr. Thorne," geopolitical analyst added.

My phone started ringing incessantly. The United States, the European Union, Russia - all reacting to the massive Chinese offer.

"Kai," Katharina said, "it's over. No country can match this. China won."

I looked at the screen where Tucker was doing analysis:

"Ladies and gentlemen, unless some country makes an even more extraordinary offer in the next 24 hours, it appears that China has just secured the location of Dr. Thorne Academy with an offer that redefines the concept of government investment in science."

It was exactly what I had expected, but the scale exceeded even my most optimistic expectations.

With $220 billion over 25 years, academia would have the resources to fulfill not only its stated medical mission, but much more ambitious secret goals.

Sufficient resources to prepare humanity for the cosmic challenges to come.

And China, unbeknownst to it, had just funded the next phase of human evolution.

"System," I muttered silently, "looks like we're going to China."

It was time to begin preparation for the change that would define the future of human civilization.

And China had just made this possible on a scale that transcended anything it had dreamed of.

At 00:15, just when we thought the bidding had peaked with the $220 billion Chinese offer, Tucker received an urgent communication.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have just received an official statement from the White House. The President of the United States will be making a live statement in five minutes."

Katharina looked at me. "They won't give up."

"It's a matter of national pride now," Markus noted. "No American president can allow China to 'win' something so public."

On screen, the camera shifted to the Oval Office. The President appeared behind the desk, his expression serious and determined.

"My fellow Americans and citizens of the world," he began, "Dr. Thorne's Academy represents more than medical advancement. It represents the future of humanity. The United States will not allow this opportunity to be lost."

Dramatic pause.

"I therefore authorize an American response that demonstrates our absolute commitment to leadership in medicine and science."

An official document appeared on the screen:

"Three hundred and twenty-five billion dollars," Tucker announced, his voice thick with admiration. "The United States just raised the stakes by over a hundred billion."

My phone immediately blew up. China, of course, but also numbers I didn't recognize.

"Dr. Thorne," came a voice he didn't recognize, "this is the Russian Foreign Minister. We have a proposal we would like to discuss."

"Dr. Thorne," another voice, "Brazilian Minister. Brazil would like to form a coalition for a joint response."

"Dr. Thorne," third voice, "Representative of South Africa. The BRICS countries would like to coordinate a response."

On the screen, Tucker was receiving multiple updates:

"The situation is escalating dramatically. Sources confirm emergency meetings in Moscow, Brasilia, Pretoria, and New Delhi. It appears that the BRICS countries are coordinating a joint response to the US-Chinese escalation."

At 00:45, I received a call from Dr. Li Wei:

"Dr. Thorne, China is preparing a counteroffer that will be announced within the hour. But I also need to inform you of an interesting development."

"What development?"

"Russia, Brazil, India, and South Africa have contacted us. They propose a BRICS Plus alliance for a coordinated response. Combined resources of five emerging economies."

"A coalition?"

"Exactly. Instead of competing against each other, join forces to outbid the American offer. Dr. Thorne, the combined resources would be... astronomical."

At 1:00 a.m., Tucker made an announcement that would change everything:

"We have just received an extraordinary joint statement from five countries: China, Russia, Brazil, India, and South Africa announcing the formation of the 'Global Alliance for Medical Academia' - a coalition specifically to host Dr. Thorne's Academy."

The screen showed the flags of the five countries side by side.

"In two hours, the leaders of these five countries will make a joint announcement via global video conference of a proposal that, according to sources, 'will redefine the concept of international cooperation.'"

Katharina was monitoring multiple sources. "Kai, this is unprecedented. Five countries forming an alliance just for one proposal? It's never happened in history."

"The combined resources of these countries are..." Markus consulted his laptop, "combined GDP of approximately $25 trillion. If they devote even a small percentage to academia..."

At 01:30, other countries began to respond:

Tucker announced: "The European Union has called an emergency session. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are considering forming their own coalition. Japan and South Korea are discussing an Asian partnership. Canada and Australia are exploring a Commonwealth alliance."

It was escalating into a global geopolitical reorganization.

"Kai," Katharina said, "the academy has become a catalyst for a new world order. Countries are forming alliances that could last decades."

At 2:00 a.m., the BRICS leaders' video conference began. Tucker broadcast live:

Five leaders appeared on a split screen - Xi Jinping of China, Putin of Russia, Lula of Brazil, Modi of India, and Ramaphosa of South Africa.

Xi Jinping spoke first:

"Citizens of the world, Dr. Thorne's Academy represents an opportunity to demonstrate that international cooperation can overcome destructive competition. Five nations, representing half the world's population, join forces."

Putin continued:

"The Global Alliance for Medical Academia is not just about financial resources. It is about creating a model of cooperation that benefits all of humanity, not just rich nations."

Lula added:

"Brazil offers the biodiversity of the Amazon, unlimited natural resources, and a commitment to environmental sustainability."

Modi contributed:

"India has the largest young population in the world, an advanced technological sector, and an ancient tradition in medicine."

Ramaphosa concluded:

"South Africa offers unique mineral resources, a strategic position, and a commitment to global health equity."

Xi resumed speaking:

"We now present the Alliance's joint proposal:"

SINGLE ADDITIONAL:

Tucker was speechless for a full moment before he managed to speak:

"This is... this is seven hundred and ninety billion dollars. Nation status for the academy. Its own army. This is no longer an academy offering - this is the creation of a new global superpower."

The panel of experts was in complete shock.

"I've never seen anything like this," one economist muttered. "Five countries essentially creating a sixth country specifically for one institution."

"Geopolitically, this changes the global balance of power," one international analyst added. "The academy would not just be a medical center - it would be an independent player in world politics."

My phone was ringing off the hook. Numbers from all over the world.

White House: "Dr. Thorne, the President has convened an emergency National Security Council."

European Union: "Dr. Thorne, the EU is considering a response that would include all 27 countries plus the UK."

Japan: "Dr. Thorne, an Asian coalition is being formed for a counterproposal."

At 2:45, Tucker made an even more dramatic announcement:

"We just received... this is unbelievable. The European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand announce the formation of the 'Western Alliance for Academia' as a direct response to the BRICS coalition."

"What about the United States?" someone asked in the studio.

"The United States... has just announced that it will increase its individual bid to outbid any coalition."

Katharina looked at me with an expression of utter astonishment. "Kai, you didn't just create an academy auction. You created a global geopolitical realignment. New alliances are being formed in real time."

"And we still have 22 hours until the deadline," Markus added.

At 3:00, the American President made a second statement:

"Dr. Thorne's Academy is too important to be influenced by coalition politics. The United States will make a final offer that transcends any competition."

Tucker paused dramatically: "The United States just offered to make academia the 51st American state with a trillion-dollar budget."

It was 3:15 in the morning and the situation had transcended anything I could have imagined. It was no longer an auction for gym locations.

It was a cold war being fought through financial offers.

And there were still 21 hours left.

"System," I muttered, "would that scale of resources be enough for... anything?"

Anything at all. Including preparing humanity for threats they never dreamed existed.

It was perfect.

He would let the war continue until the deadline. Whoever won, the academy would have the resources to fulfill objectives that transcended the understanding of any offering government.

"Kai," Katharina said, "do you realize that you literally changed the world order in 24 hours?"

Smile.

"It's not over yet."

At 3:30 a.m., I got up from the couch in my office where I had been watching this geopolitical soap opera unfold. I went to the small refrigerator I kept in the corner and grabbed a bag of Doritos chips—the same kind I usually ate during long programming sessions.

"Kai," Katharina looked at me incredulously, "you're eating snacks while the world is literally rearranging itself?"

"Hunger is hunger," I replied, flopping back onto the couch and opening the package with a satisfying pop. "Besides, this will last all night. I need to keep my energy up."

On screen, Tucker was clearly exhausted but energized by the historic magnitude of what he was covering:

"Welcome back to our special coverage of 'Academy Auction.' It's 3:35 a.m. Eastern time, and we just received news that could change everything again."

I munched on a Dorito as Tucker continued:

"Sources confirm that Japan has abandoned its neutral stance and is officially joining the BRICS Alliance. In addition, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia are forming a unified Asian bloc with the BRICS coalition."

"Now we have," Tucker gestured to the digital map behind him, "BRICS+Asia versus the new 'Atlantic Alliance' of the US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand."

I grabbed another snack. It was like watching War being played out on a global scale, except the prize was my gym.

At 4:00, my phone rang. It was a Japanese number.

"Dr. Thorne, this is the Prime Minister of Japan speaking personally."

I nearly choked on my Dorito. "Prime Minister, it's... an honor."

"Dr. Thorne, Japan has made a historic decision to join the BRICS+Asia coalition. I would like to personally explain our position."

"Please."

"Academia represents the future of humanity. It cannot be controlled by a single region or ideology. Asia+BRICS represents true diversity - different cultures, economies, medical traditions. We offer not just resources, but the collective wisdom of 4 billion people."

"I understand."

"Dr. Thorne, our updated offer will be announced within the hour. It will be... unprecedented in human history."

I hung up and looked at Katharina and Markus, both of whom were staring at me.

"The Prime Minister of Japan called personally," he said casually, picking up another snack.

"Of course you did," Markus muttered. "At this point, I think you could get a call from the Pope."

As if on cue, my phone rang again. Vatican number.

"You're joking," Katharina said.

Attend. "Dr. Thorne."

"Dr. Thorne, this is the Vatican Secretary of State. His Holiness would like to offer spiritual perspective on the offerings he is receiving."

I chewed thoughtfully. "What kind of perspective?"

"Pope Francis believes that academia should serve the poor, not just rich nations. He urges that it consider not just financial resources, but commitment to global health justice."

"Please convey to the Pope that his words are greatly appreciated. The academy will definitely serve everyone, regardless of national wealth."

It was true, though for reasons the Pope could not imagine.

At 4:30, Tucker gave a dramatic update:

"Confirmed: European Union and United States have formalized the 'Atlantic Alliance for Academia.' 30 countries, representing approximately $45 trillion in combined GDP."

The map on the screen showed the world divided into two massive blocks:

BLOCK 1: BRICS+ASIA

China, Russia, Brazil, India, South Africa

Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia

Population: 4.2 billion

Combined GDP: $35 trillion

BLOCK 2: ATLANTIC ALLIANCE

United States, entire European Union, United Kingdom

Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Iceland

Population: 1.1 billion

Combined GDP: $45 trillion

"Literally half the world economy versus the other half," Tucker observed. "It's like the Cold War is back, but fought over medical academy deals."

I grabbed a handful of snacks and settled back into the couch. It was absolutely surreal.

"Kai," Katharina said, "do you realize that you have created a new global bipolarity? It is no longer East versus West, it is Asia+Emerging versus Atlantic+Developed."

"And we still have," I looked at my watch, "eight and a half hours until the deadline."

At 5:00, Tucker announced that he was changing the format:

"Given the historic magnitude of this competition, Fox News will broadcast without interruption through the midnight deadline. We are now bringing you our expanded panel of experts."

The screen split to show eight different experts - economists, political scientists, military analysts, even a historian.

"Professor Chen," Tucker addressed the Asia expert, "what is the meaning of the BRICS+Asia alliance?"

"Tucker, for the first time in modern history, Asia is completely unified in common purpose. China and Japan, historic rivals, are working together. India and China are putting aside their disputes. This is a fundamental reorganization of Asian power."

"And economically?"

"Combined GDP of $35 trillion, but more importantly - 60% of the world's population, 70% of global manufacturing, majority of natural resources. If unified, this bloc has the potential for total economic dominance."

I chewed thoughtfully. It was fascinating how my simple gym had become a catalyst for changes that analysts predicted would take decades.

At 5:30, I received a call that almost made me spit out my snack:

"Dr. Thorne, this is Vladimir Putin speaking directly."

Putin. Putin himself was calling me.

"President Putin, it's... unexpected."

"Dr. Thorne, BRICS+Asia represents a multipolar future where no single power dominates. Academia in our coalition would be a symbol that advanced medicine does not belong solely to the West."

His voice was calm, measured, but he could sense intensity behind it.

"What can you tell me about the updated offer?"

"Dr. Thorne, the resources we will provide transcend money. We are talking about reshaping the global order for the next 100 years. Academia would be a central piece of this new world order."

"I understand."

"I know you get pressure from many sides. But consider: What legacy do you want? Academia that serves 1 billion wealthy people, or academia that serves 4 billion people from diverse backgrounds?"

It was a compelling argument, though I knew that academia would eventually serve all of humanity regardless of location.

At 06:00, the Atlantic Alliance made a dramatic move:

Tucker announced: "President Biden, German Chancellor, French President, and British Prime Minister to make joint statement in 30 minutes. Sources suggest 'definitive response' to Asian coalition."

At 6:30, four leaders appeared in a joint video conference:

Biden spoke first: "The Atlantic Alliance represents democratic values, scientific transparency, and a commitment to human rights that must guide the medicine of the future."

The German Chancellor continued: "Europe and America together have created most of the medical advances in history. Academia belongs where innovation already exists."

The French President added: "France offers cultural sophistication, Europe offers intellectual diversity, America offers technological resources."

The British Prime Minister concluded: "The UK connects Europe and America, offering regulatory expertise and global connections."

Biden resumed: "We present the final offer of the Atlantic Alliance:"

Tucker paused for breath. "One trillion, nine hundred and fifty billion dollars. Academia as a virtual nation. Dr. Thorne as president of a country dedicated to medicine."

I finished the bag of chips and looked at the clock: 06:45.

There were five hours and fifteen minutes left.

"Kai," Markus said, "bids have gone from billions to trillions. Literally a percentage of global GDP."

"And now BRICS+Asia has to respond," Katharina added.

At 7:00, I received a text from Xi Jinping personally:

"Dr. Thorne, BRICS+Asia will make final offer at 11:00 PM today. It will be the largest collaboration in human history. Please wait for our response before deciding."

At 8:00 a.m., the sun rose over Cambridge, but no one in the office had slept. The energy was frenetic - watching history being made in real time.

Tucker had been replaced by a rested anchor crew, but coverage continued nonstop.

"BRICS+Asia promised final response by 11pm tonight," the new anchor announced. "One hour before the deadline. Sources suggest it will be 'unprecedented in scale and ambition'."

At 12:00, I ordered pizza. I had to eat something more substantial than chips.

"Kai," Katharina said as we ate, "you're remarkably calm for someone who has the two most powerful coalitions in the world competing for her attention."

"It's fascinating," I replied honestly. "Like a game of chess being played by grandmasters, except the pieces are entire countries."

"And you are the one who decides the winner."

"The system decides the winner," I corrected. "I simply evaluate which option best serves the true purposes of the academy."

Purposes that transcended anything the coalitions could imagine.

At 6:00 p.m., both coalitions began final preparations. News reports showed massive meetings in Beijing, Moscow, Washington, Brussels.

"Biggest diplomatic day in decades," one analyst noted. "Multiple countries reshaping alliances that have lasted since World War II."

At 8:00 p.m., the countdown began in earnest. Three hours until the final BRICS+Asia offer, four hours until the deadline.

Tucker had returned for the final hours:

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are entering the final phase of what historians will surely call the most consequential auction in human history."

At 9:00 p.m., my phone was ringing off the hook. World leaders, ambassadors, ministers—all wanting last-minute leverage.

I let most of them go to voicemail. The decision would be based on facts, not personal appeals.

By 10pm, the tension was palpable even through the television. You could feel the whole world holding its breath.

At 10:30 p.m., Xi Jinping appeared alone on Chinese state television to pre-announce:

"Citizens of the world, the BRICS+Asia coalition represents 60% of humanity. Our final offering will be a gift for the future of medicine that serves all people, not just the privileged."

At 22:45, the countdown began: "Fifteen minutes until the final BRICS+Asia offer."

I grabbed a new pack of chips.

It was going to be a spectacular ending.

At 10:58 pm, Xi Jinping, Putin, Modi, Lula, Ramaphosa, Japanese Prime Minister, Korean President, and leaders of other Asian countries all appeared in a massive video conference.

Two minutes until the announcement that would determine where the academy would be built and how many resources it would have.

And honestly?

I was having fun watching the world regroup around a decision that I ultimately already knew the answer to.

But they didn't need to know that yet.
