I stare at the sun setting behind the soccer field, making the grass seem darker. I can hear the laughter and chatter from my teammates. It's the end of another grueling game, but all I can think about is the upcoming championship game. I'm the captain of our varsity soccer team and it's my last year at this school, my only chance to impress the college scouts.
"Hey, Mason! You coming to the party tonight?" Lucas, my best friend, fellow teammate and my least favorite goalie, comes running at me.
I shrug. "I don't know man, I've got a lot on my plate right now."
Lucas just rolls his eyes at me. "Man just take a break, we just won the game, by a landslide too. We need to celebrate!"
"True," I want to celebrate, but today's my day off and I want to get homework done, and work on some mistakes I made in the game today. "I have to fix the mistakes I made in today's game."
He raises his eyebrow at me and then sighs "Okay, how about this, Xamira will be at the party today." Before I can respond he puts his finger infront of my face, shushing me "Don't act like you don't care, I see you stare at her all the time!"
Well I guess I haven't been exactly subtle at hiding my attraction to Xamira. Me and Xamira ended up having 1st and 6th period together this year, but we don't sit next to each other so I end up never finding a reason to talk to her, she's in a dance group. Sometimes I watch her dance videos on YouTube.
"Hey, Earth to Mason!" Lucas is waving a hand in front of my face, pulling me back to reality.
I shake my head, "Sorry what?"
"You coming to the party or no?"
"Oh, yeah, I guess I will go to the party." He smirks at me
"Wow, You will go for Xamira but not for me? I'm hurt!" He starts fake crying to make me feel guilty.
"If I go to a party with you people will think we are friends, I can't allow that" He makes a shocked face that makes me laugh.
'~30 minutes later~'
The music is loud, and I can hear laughter from the backyard. My teammates greeted me as soon as I stepped inside, I noticed Xamira pretty quick. She's standing near the kitchen, talking with a few friends. She looks gorgeous, her dark curly hair fits suits her perfectly. I'm not one to get nervous easily, especially not after all the pressure I dealt with on the field, but something about Xamira makes me second-guess myself.
Lucas then appears at my side, nudging me with his elbow. "Maybe instead of staring at her, you should go talk to her?"
I shoot him a look, but he isn't wrong. If I keep staring at her like this people might think I'm a weirdo. As if sensing me staring, she glances over in my direction. Our eyes meet briefly before she turns back to her friends, laughing at something one of them had said. I make up my mind and start moving towards her, weaving through the crowd of people. When I get close enough to hear her voice, I speak up. "Hey, Xamira."
She turns toward me, making a suprised face. "Oh, hey Mason! Wait, your name is Mason right?" She has a confused expression, it's cute as hell.
I chuckle, "Yeah, you got it right the first time don't worry."
She smiles, Jesus her smile looks even better up close. "You played a great game today."
She was at the game today?. "Uh, yeah. Thanks. You were incredible at your last competition, by the way."
She goes wide eyed, "You saw that?"
"Of course," I sound, a little more confident now. "I would never miss one of your dances."
"You're not saying that just to be nice, are you?" she tilts her head slightly.
I smile at that. "Nah you guys really killed it out there. I don't think I've ever seen anyone move like you do."
Her cheeks turn a light pink and smiles. "Thanks, that means a lot. Dance is everything to me, you know?"
I nodded. "I get it. Soccer is kind of my everything too."
"I noticed," she said, her smile widening. "You've got a killer kick."
"Thanks, have you watched any of our games in the past or was it just this one?"
"No, just this one. Don't get me wrong, I like soccer, I just don't exactly that much free time on my hands."
Understandable. "Same, I often have to download TV shows to watch when I'm on the bus" I pause for a second "Hey would you like to-"
"Yo! Mason were you been? I've been looking for you forever." my teammate wraps his arm around me, I'm about to tell him we can talk later when Xamira spoke up.
"Go, we can talk another time." she has a teasing smirk on her face, that gives me butterflies, but honestly anything she does would give me butterflies. My teammate heard what she said and grabbed my arm, dragging me with him to the living room, where all my teammates are.
