Chapter 14 - The First Tape Recorder

The machine was built in 1932,

but the tape it played back came from somewhere else.

Some when else.

It was a prototype — hand-built in a basement lab in Vienna.

No brand.

No serial number.

Just a brass plate that said:

"Für das, was zwischen den Tönen lebt."

"For that which lives between tones."

No one knows who built it.

The apartment burned down three weeks later.

But the device survived.

Because the device always survives.

Years later, it resurfaced at a flea market in Berlin.

Dusty.

Heavy.

Still functional.

No one could explain how.

It had no power source.

Just a single reel of black tape — slightly sticky to the touch.

And when you press play,

you don't hear voices.

You hear breathing.

At first.

Then whispers.

Then things that sound like voices,

but speak in frequencies that make your teeth ache.

The man who bought it — Dieter Henn — became obsessed.

He played it every night.

He said he could hear memories in it.

Not his.

Not anyone's he knew.

Just… fragments:

A baby crying in a war that never happened.A woman whispering in a language without vowels.A sound like paper being torn inside your skull.

He began to record over the tape,

hoping to trap his own voice into it.

He never heard himself.

He only heard it getting louder.

On the final night of his journal, he wrote:

"I asked it a question.

It answered.

Not in sound.

In me."

He was never seen again.

The machine passed from collector to collector.

Always unmarked.

Always found, never sold.

And each time, the tape plays a different message.

Sometimes it repeats things the listener has thought but never said.

Sometimes it finishes their sentences.

Sometimes… it says their name.

Before they press play.

Now, it's rumored to be in a university archive.

Locked in a temperature-controlled case.

Labeled:

UNSAFE – DO NOT ACTIVATE

But every few months,

someone does.

And the tape always has something new to say.

Like it's still listening.

Still recording.

Even when no one presses record.

Especially then.
