Chapter 1 - THE MOMENT I DIED

The sky was broken.

A giant crack shimmered across the clouds, glowing with twisted colors—dark violet, sickly green, and deep black. Thunder rumbled in the distance, and sharp rain fell like pieces of shattered glass. Sirens screamed from every direction.

A Rift had opened.

And beneath the chaos, buried under steel, fire, and dust, a boy lay motionless—his body beaten, his breath shallow.

Kael Ardyn, seventeen years old, was dying.

He couldn't feel his legs. His left arm was crushed beneath a metal beam. Cuts ran down his face, dripping warm blood into one eye. His body was shaking—not from fear, but from the shock of too much pain.

Smoke curled through the air around him, thick and choking. Flames danced in the distance. The floor beneath him trembled every few seconds as another explosion rumbled through the ruins of the city.

This was supposed to be a normal day.

Kael's head spun. His ears were ringing. He could barely see.

His body screamed for him to move, to crawl, to escape.

But he couldn't.

He was dying—and he knew it.

Just fifteen minutes ago, Kael had been standing quietly in the academy's Rift testing hall. Rows of students lined up, each waiting to place their hand on a glowing scanner that would check their potential.

Kael stood at the very back. Head down. Eyes quiet.

He didn't need to hear the whispers. He'd heard them his whole life.

"That's the Rift orphan."

"Didn't his brother explode in a Rift last year?"

"Why's he even here? He doesn't have a class. Just give up already."

Kael didn't speak. Didn't look up.

He was used to being ignored… or hated.

Then it happened.

The air split open with a high-pitched scream.

The lights went out.

The building shook—

And a Rift opened in the middle of the city.

Without warning.

Without reason.

Now, Kael was lying at the bottom of the disaster. The city around him was broken. Buildings had fallen. Roads had cracked wide open. Everything was red, black, and burning.

Then—

Footsteps.

Heavy. Slow. Getting closer.

Kael blinked blood from his eye. Through the smoke, a tall figure stepped into view.

Commander Rhaz.

His mentor.

His executioner.

The man wore a long grey coat over a suit of armor. His chest plate was scratched. One eye was covered by a glowing red lens. His face was calm—but his eyes were cold.

"You're still alive?" Rhaz said quietly, looking down at him.

Kael tried to speak, but blood bubbled in his throat.

"You were at Ground Zero," Rhaz continued, voice flat. "No log. No trigger. No sign. A Rift just opens—right where you stand. Convenient."

Kael blinked. What is he saying?

"You survived. Everyone else died. That makes you suspicious."

Rhaz reached into his coat.

"It doesn't matter what really happened," he said. "The higher-ups need someone to blame."

He pulled out a silver pistol.

Kael's heart stopped.

"You'll be the scapegoat. Nothing personal."

Rhaz pointed the gun at Kael's forehead.

"At least you won't feel anything."

BANG.

The world turned white.

And then—

It rewound.

He was standing.

He looked around.

Bright lights above him. Clean white walls. The quiet hum of machines.

He was back in the testing room.

Students stood ahead of him in line, whispering, bored, unaware.

No rubble. No smoke. No fire. No Rift.

It hadn't happened yet.

But Kael remembered everything.

A screen appeared in front of his eyes—blue, glowing, floating like a hologram.

Outside the tall windows, a deep vibration rumbled in the clouds.

The Rift was coming again.

But this time…

Kael was ready.

To be continued.
