"Did you… do something to me?" I asked cautiously, glancing up at my great-grandfather as we walked down the quiet street toward my apartment.
He looked at me, genuinely puzzled. "What do you mean?"
I hesitated, trying to piece together the thoughts swirling in my mind. "I heard there are fairies stationed here in the human world—agents of the realm who monitor magic and detect trespassers like me. Ever since I left for the fairy realm, I was told I could never return. That I'd be sensed immediately. Tracked. Taken."
He didn't respond right away, but the glimmer in his eyes shifted—faintly amused, but mostly proud.
"Well," he said at last, with a confident smile, "your great-grandfather is one of the most powerful beings to ever walk between worlds. I cloaked your essence. Masked your magic. You're invisible to them, Violet. No one from the fairy realm, the immortal courts, or even the demon world could trace you unless I allow it."
