Chapter 759 - Chapter 759: Computer

After the 'smoke' somewhat dispersed, Andy followed behind Eliza and Grindelwald.

Looking at the hot 'smoke' and stuff, Andy entered the room filled with anticipation, with his mind whirling with imagination and ideas of what was inside.

Staring at all the stuff inside the room, Andy froze in place, dumbstruck.

He was not stunned by what he saw but shocked and confused as to why the things he once saw in the museum in his previous life appeared in a room where wizards research stuff.

In the centre of the room, there was a fountain with a huge bronze boiler in the centre of the pool instead of a statue.

The boiler didn't seem to use wood or charcoal to heat up; maybe it was modified into a magical item.

The steam from the boiler travels through the network of glass pipes connected to the boiler and ends up in various types of big and small steam engines. With four to five wizards observing and making notes.

Is Wizard World going to enter the Steam era?

What's next? Will wizards zealously start to preach: With steel as a body, gears as organs, steam core as heart, and magic and steam as blood, we are going to start a mechanical ascension?

Seeing the stunned Andy and observing Grindelwald, Eliza asked, looking at the mechanical items full of pride. "Are you captivated by these mechanical and steam beauties?"

Andy snapped back to reality at her question. Turned to her and nodded with a fake smile.

What can he do? He doesn't know how to respond now.

"We have been trying to learn and modify muggle technologies for decades, now-"

"You guys know what the term 'technology' is, right?" Eliza turned to Andy and questioned him.

"Don't worry, ma'am, I already learned lots of Muggle terms. You can use those terms to explain without worry. If I don't understand something, I will ask you." Andy said with a go-on gesture.

"I already read all the reports you guys sent. So explain it to him."

"I am only here to show Andy that our wizard world is also improving, and now we only need time, hope and a common goal for everyone to unite and work together." Grindelwald looked at Andy and said.

He has already been to the New World (America), where they are testing and modifying muggle weapons like guns and tanks. They invited him a few days before to test the power of modified tanks and artillery.

While the tank's firepower was useless against his shield charm, some artillery was able to crack his shield after a few rounds. Normal wizards are only capable of defending against those when three or four wizards cast Protego Maxima together.

Even normal bullets were able to break through the shield charm of young wizards.

Thinking about this made Grindelwald determined to change the curriculum of wizard school, with at least one compulsory combat-focused class.

"The muggles have been using electricity instead of steam for a long time now. Have you guys started to research that as well?" Andy asked, looking at the gears and machines, changing the topic.

He is not aware that electronic items would malfunction or become unusable in environments with a high concentration of magic.

"Electronic technology will become junk in places with a high concentration of magic, like the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts."

"They aren't pure enough. They need to be modified into magical items for them to become pure." Eliza said with a slight disgust.

"But mechanical and steam machines are different."

"They are pure!"

"We only need to discard parts that are made to burn or heat wood, coal, and other impure things as fuel for the machines. Modify them to make them only use magic and steam as fuel. Only steam and magic are pure and wouldn't corrupt our bodies and nature!" Eliza explained with vigour, with fire in her eyes.

"..."

Andy's lips twitched.

She really loves steam and mechanical machines, huh? And is magic similar to EMI?

"Does Knight Bus also work on steam as well? And it is modified into an alchemical item, right?" Andy shook his head and asked, looking at an engine, thinking about the Knight Bus and its magical abilities.

"Yes, it uses water and magic as fuel. With a rune combination that can make it travel through even in paper-thin space (gap), which from inside might look like everything moving out of its way."

Alchemy is really something, with many miraculous and varied abilities that modern magic still can't replicate.

Andy felt envious, thinking about some miraculous, reality-bending abilities of alchemical items, which he wished to have.

While strolling and looking at various engines and machines, Andy felt determined to make those abilities his own one day.

While musing, Andy suddenly stopped before one machine with widened eyes, making Eliza and Grindelwald stop and look at him and turn to where his eyes were looking.

There, a machine was working, emitting slight sound and heat, with two personnel assigned to this machine alone.

One is taking notes and data, while the other has his wand on a crystal ball in front of the machine.

This machine has gears of all sizes intervened, connected by levers and rods that snake across the metal framework like metallic vines.

"Is it an analytic engine?" Andy looked shocked.

He had seen it in the forum in his previous life; a computer geek gushed about how it is the first computer and how awesome and cool it is, so he still remembers its appearance.

Compared to other machines, Andy felt that if wizards could modify this and make their own version of it, wizards could progress a lot faster using it.

"Yes, but we like to use the term 'thinking machine.' It is capable of performing any calculation, any complex equation. We only need to teach it how to do it once, a step muggles refer to as programming."

"They used punched cards to teach it. After teaching it once, it is capable of remembering it and solving the calculation later on its own like us. We switched the punched cards with a crystal ball for input and output."

"But, for now, it is still inferior to the big crystal orb outside when it comes to arithmetical calculation and observation purposes. The only area it is better than the crystal orb is its slight thinking capabilities and less need for talented wizards to use it."

"Now, we are figuring out how to replicate its thinking function and combine it with the big crystal orb outside to make a magical version of it," Eliza explained in a serious and analytical tone.

At her words and explanation, many thoughts whirred in Andy's mind.

So wizards will soon have our own version of computers?

Just thinking about the scenes of wizards wearing watches with a small crystal orb at the centre and a big crystal orb at their study desks and using it like a computer and smartphone made Andy's lip twitch.

But the thought of owning them again made him feel excited.

Andy resolved to improve his alchemy skills and knowledge in the next few years to help them create a computer later.
