Chapter 96: Destroyed
Everyone was so focused on each other that no one heard James approach, even though he never tried to muffle the sound of his steps or anything of the sort.
Sirius was yelling curses at Snape, and Snape was yelling back at him.
Lily had tears falling across her face and was shouting for everyone to stop, but no one was listening to her.
Rabastan Lestrange lunged forward, aiming his wand at Remus, intending to end this futile resistance.
By the way he moved his wand and the first sounds that came from his mouth, James could already tell what spell he was trying to use.
The Drought Curse was a nasty one. Curses were already above jinxes and hexes in terms of harm.
This one was used to dehydrate the victim's body. It wasn't lethal...as long as the person received immediate help, but it was still very dangerous.
Definitely not something that students should be using during a school brawl.
Remus raised a protective charm. Unfortunately for him, that wouldn't work against a curse like the one heading his way.
Rabastan shouted the incantation, and a blue orb came flying from his wand.
But it never hit its intended target. Instead, it impacted against a small brick wall that manifested between them.
Physical objects were the best way to block curses, as very few of them could pass through and still retain significant force.
"What the…" Rabastan and the others stared in shock at the wall as it was crushed by the spell.
None of the other Gryffindor students had moved, and Remus was still holding his Protego, so it wasn't him.
That's when they realized someone else had arrived.
The eyes of the Lestrange boy moved swiftly until they found the figure of James, standing just a short distance behind them, right before the entrance of the clearing.
"Po—" That was as far as Rabastan got before four Bone-Breaker curses hit his two arms and legs. They came out of nowhere and he didn't even see James moving his wand or muttering any chant. It all happened too quickly.
In reality, James had only cast a single silent hex just as Rabastan was turning around. Multiplying a single spell was far easier than it seemed, once you had complete control over the magic you were casting. All you had to do was increase the output and slightly adjust the mental image behind the spell.
While Rabastan collapsed onto the ground, screaming, James had already cast his next spell.
A bright ray of light shot into the sky before exploding about fifty feet in the air.
From the initial burst, a translucent dome emerged and covered the entire area.
This charm created a thin barrier with one simple purpose: to prevent any sound from leaving the dome, no matter how loud it was.
Snape stared at him in shock, mouth open to speak.
The three unknown Slytherin students turned to look at him. But even after seeing their faces, James still had no idea who they were.
"James!" Sirius and Remus called out to him.
A potion fell from James's pocket and shot like a bullet, propelled by a silent banishing charm.
It shattered at the feet of the three Slytherin boys. These ones looked confused, likely wondering what the purpose of the potion was. No smoke, mist, or any other harmful substance seems to emanate from this one's remnants.
They had about a second and a half to wonder, before thorned vines erupted from the ground and wrapped around them, bending their limbs in unnatural ways, piercing their flesh, restraining their movements, and lifting them into the air.
The boys screamed like crazy, and James moved to the next target.
Snape didn't even notice the brick wall that appeared behind him. What he did notice was the sudden, powerful force that slammed him backward into it, breaking several bones in the process.
Before he could process what had just happened, or how much pain he was in, another spell hit him. His flesh and bones began to twist and morph.
His skin turned green and slimy, while his body shrank to a fraction of its original size.
"Croak!" Snape could only emit noises now. Even if he was a big green toad with a long patch of black hair on his head, he couldn't jump...not with broken legs.
Rodolphus Lestrange knew better than to waste time talking. The boy had been trained in combat by his father and uncle since he was a toddler and knew how to recognize danger.
"Crucio!" he shouted.
He had always been proud of being able to cast an Unforgivable Curse at such a young age...a feat not many could boast.
The Cruciatus Curse was harder to dodge than even the Killing Curse, which was why many dark wizards used it first. It was meant to disable their victims before moving on to the killing blow.
James didn't even try to avoid it.
The next instant, every pain receptor in his body lit up, sending waves of agony through him.
He couldn't be called a combat veteran, and yet, he had been hit with this curse so many times that he had developed methods to push through the pain...just enough to remain functional.
The grin of satisfaction on Rodolphus's face quickly faded when he realized the curse hadn't even slowed James down… not even a little bit. The most agonizing curse in the world hadn't even made him flinch.
James's wand flicked like a lightning bolt, and a barrage of spells flew toward Rodolphus.
Expelliarmus. Jelly-Legs Jinx. Langlock. Full Body Bind.
All of them hit at once, sending the large young man tumbling down like he was nothing.
Only then did James take the chance to pull out a potion and drink it. As soon as he did, most of the pain from the Cruciatus faded.
The fight was over...and it had lasted less than ten seconds in total.
His friends stood there, frozen, watching in shock as the quiet James Potter, who usually only cared about working in his lab or reading books...had completely dominated six senior students in an instant and defeated them in such a brutal way, leaving them bloody and broken.
This was a glimpse of the real James Potter.
