Chapter 103: I Need a Name
Just like how it happened with Primum, the thick liquid began to turn transparent as the creature inside absorbed all the useful properties from the material used in its creation.
Once enough had been absorbed, they were able to see what was inside.
"Whoa…" Bella stared at the creature with astonishment while James observed it with care, to make sure that everything looked as it should.
The little one inside the glass jar seemed to still be in a state of slumber, but would occasionally move her limbs.
"Everything looks good. Let's get you out of there." James stood over the jar and gently picked up the small creature in his hands.
"Well, this one is nothing like Primum, you were right about that," Bella pointed out the obvious as she got her face closer.
In fact, the only thing they may have in common was that both creatures had wings.
What James was holding in his hands looked more like a tiny person with a pair of almost translucent wings and some striking silver hair.
"What is she?" Bella asked.
"Technically, she is also a chimera. A mixture of several magical beings. But the reality is that she is a bit more complex than Primum… because she could also qualify as a homunculus due to her human parts."
James moved her wings out of the way.
"She's not waking up… is something wrong?" Bella asked with concern. She had a weakness for small, cute magical creatures. Not that she would ever admit it to anyone.
"The Djinn Essence must be difficult for her to process… it was not part of the original recipe," James commented.
"Then why did you add it?" Bella may not know a single thing about alchemy or what this essence was, but even so, it seemed obvious that adding extra ingredients to a recipe was just asking for trouble.
"Because I know it's going to produce better results… just wait for a bit." He was still confident in his decision to add this last ingredient.
This wasn't someone else's recipe either. It was something he had created himself.
This was the first step he had made before creating a proper homunculus. In fact, in his last life, it had been this same creation that made him world-famous, so he knew it very well.
"Mmm…" The little person in James's hands opened her mouth and made some noises.
"Oh, she's finally waking up!," Bella noted.
Just a moment later, the tiny girl opened her eyes. These had a striking blue tone and seemed to be brimming with magic.
The newborn creature lifted her body a bit and looked around, as if she were analyzing her surroundings.
"She is so cute!" Bella gushed with excitement at seeing this tiny person begin to move.
"She needs something else to properly function." James placed her back on top of the table and went to fetch something on the other side of the room.
"What she needs is some clothes, though." Bella couldn't help but notice that the tiny girl was completely naked.
This was normal, since she had just been born. Still, it felt wrong to keep her naked because, despite her size and the pair of wings, her body looked almost completely human.
"Give me a moment, I'll make her some garments." James returned with another cauldron that he had filled with water.
He carefully placed the cauldron down and pulled his wand out before pointing it at the fairy-looking girl.
As he did, a white dress appeared on her, covering all the parts that needed to be covered.
"Whoa, you're good with conjuration too? That's very advanced. But… won't that dress disappear in a matter of hours?" Bella asked.
"Yes, but by then… she will be able to fix it by herself." James responded.
"By herself?" Bella glanced at the girl. "You mean that this little one can use magic?"
"Not yet, but she will. At this moment, she is like an empty vessel that needs to be filled. What she needs now is knowledge," James told her.
"Mmm… yeah, I can see that." Bella noticed that the little fairy hadn't moved from the spot where James had left her.
She seemed to be busy just looking around, but wasn't doing anything else.
James placed his wand against his temple and pulled a string of silvery liquid from it.
"What is that?" Bella had never seen that before.
"Memories that I have carefully prepared for this occasion." James allowed the silver liquid to land on the water inside the cauldron. It floated on the surface, not really mixing with the water. "This will be enough knowledge for her to know how to function. She will then be able to acquire more by herself. "
He then picked up the little creature. This one offered no resistance to his touch. Much like James had said, she was like an empty shell.
A living body, but it was lacking a mind of its own.
"Are you sure that nothing went wrong? She looks like she's brain-dead," Bella said. "I mean, Primum was super cheerful after being born and flew all over the place."
"I already told you that this one is different. Primum was relying on his instincts after being born, so he already knew how to do basic things even before learning anything." James lowered the tiny creature into the water and allowed her to sink.
"She is like a brand-new computer with an empty memory card. It needs to be filled with the basic functions before she can do anything."
"A… computer?" Bella now looked super confused.
"Right…" James realized his mistake. Not only was he talking to a pureblood girl, but this was also the mid-70s, so even Muggles might not have those at home yet.
"Never mind. You'll understand in a moment. Right now, she is assimilating the memories I gave her. Once she is d—"
Before James could finish his sentence, something flew from the cauldron at great speed.
"She's flying already!" Bella exclaimed.
The little one was now moving her wings and hovering over them with ease.
"That was a lot faster than I expected." Even James was surprised by the speed at which she had assimilated all those memories. He wanted to make sure she had everything she needed to start, so he left several years' worth of information.
Her eyes became locked onto James.
"Master… I need a name."
