"Mm, alright. Sorry to trouble you, Professor Rowan."
Silas spoke politely into the phone.
"No trouble at all. Actually, it works out perfectly. A research team under me just started a new project."
"They're planning to study the probability of hatching Shiny Pokémon under different parent combinations."
"But Shiny Pokémon are just too rare and precious. The number of available samples is extremely limited, let alone different species."
"They should be thanking you for providing that Shiny Rattata."
Professor Rowan chuckled on the other end of the line.
He happened to be having a meal when he saw Silas's message, so he contacted him right away.
"Alright, then it's settled. Just transfer the Rattata over when you're ready. We'll take good care of it on our side."
After a few quick words, Professor Rowan hung up.
In any case, he was becoming more and more impressed with this young man polite, talented, and with a solid temperament.
"I'll find a time to ask those guys about him."
Thinking that, Professor Rowan turned around and dove right back into his busy research work.
Professor Oak had gone off again to give a science lecture, so a lot of the work had fallen on him. He couldn't afford to slack off.
"All done."
Back in the forest, Silas let out a sigh of relief after hanging up the phone.
A Shiny Pokémon was undoubtedly a symbol of both wealth and power. Many rich folks would go to great lengths to get their hands on one.
Rattata was also fairly suitable for raising pair it with an Everstone and it looked cute enough. It'd be a whole different story if it were a Shiny Grimer, though.
However, some dark organizations believed that Shiny Pokémon possessed powers different from normal ones, and would use them for cruel and inhumane experiments. That would be far from ideal.
To prevent the Rattata from ending up in the black market and being subjected to such horrors, Silas wanted to find it a good home. From what Professor Rowan had said, it sounded like the Rattata would have a pretty good life.
"Alright, everyone, take a break—we're having lunch now."
Silas clapped his hands instinctively, calling to his three Pokémon.
Shff shff shff—
Already waiting by the side, Blaziken darted over with incredible speed, grabbing the plates and sitting down to eat immediately.
It even remembered to place plates in front of Boldore and Pidgeot.
Silas helplessly patted Blaziken's head. "Man, you really are the ultimate food delivery bird, huh?"
Then he leisurely started preparing lunch for himself.
Their next destination was Celadon City—one of the top two major cities in the Kanto region, most famous for its Celadon Game Corner and Celadon Department Store.
He had been planning to spend some time there for quite a while now.
But before that, he needed to make a trip to Lavender Town.
Silas considered his upcoming route.
Saffron City was located right between Lavender Town and Celadon City. It would've been more convenient to head there first, but given the order and difficulty of the Gym challenges, he had decided to delay Saffron for later.
Though his mind was occupied with plans, his hands didn't slow down. He quickly finished preparing and eating lunch.
As usual, after washing the dishes, he handed them over to Blaziken for sterilization and drying. Once everything was packed up, Silas got ready to set out again.
The timing would be tight if he wanted to visit both Lavender Town and Celadon City in a single afternoon, but it was barely manageable.
Not far from where they had been, Boldore nudged Silas gently and let out a cry.
"Bold..reee!"
"Hm? Did you find something?"
Silas looked to Boldore questioningly.
Boldore swayed slightly, then used its Gravity technique to move a large rock in front of them. Beneath it, a massive hole appeared at Silas's feet.
Most likely, it had been dug out by Diglett or Dugtrio Silas quickly made the judgment.
Those two species were the most common burrowers. You could find traces of their tunnels in nearly every corner of the forest.
But this one… this one was a bit too well hidden.
Only a Pokémon like Boldore, with its exceptional sensitivity to the ground, could have detected it.
"Boldore!"
"Oh? Something down there? Then let's go have a look."
Silas hesitated for a moment, but quickly made up his mind.
He trusted in his Pokémon's strength and judgment.
After all, wasn't the whole point of Trainers exploring the wild to seek out these unknown places?
If he backed off every time he encountered such a location, wouldn't that be a betrayal of his own spirit? The adventurous impulse inside him was stirring restlessly.
Of course, descending had to be done properly it couldn't be as simple as just jumping straight down.
Silas returned his Pidgeot to its Poké Ball. It wouldn't be able to perform well underground anyway.
"Blaziken, I'm counting on you. Boldore, help control the sand and gravel from behind."
The two Pokémon nodded slightly.
It was rather peculiar when you thought about it Boldore lived underground and was a Rock-type Pokémon. It made sense that it would naturally be able to learn Ground-type moves like Dig.
But unfortunately, research had shown that Boldore couldn't learn Dig.
Instead, they moved through the earth slowly, using their control over rocks and sand to carve paths forward.
Ironically, it was Blaziken who could learn the move Dig.
Still, when the two worked together, the result was impressively efficient.
Blaziken's claws dug downward with incredible speed, while Boldore handled the excess sand and stone, reinforcing the surrounding walls and keeping the slope from becoming too steep.
If they hadn't done that, Silas probably would've had to slide down like on a slide.
Never mind what dangers might await below even with Silas's excellent physical fitness, a straight drop of that distance, according to Boldore, would've been a rough landing.
Silas pulled down the visor on his exploration suit and carefully followed the two Pokémon as they made their way down.
Above them, the rocks were quietly shifted back into place by Boldore, sealing off the entrance.
There was no need to worry about the oxygen supply underground. These tunnels were interconnected in all directions, and with the Pokémon's efforts, the underground had essentially formed a small but stable ecosystem.
At the bottom of the tunnel, Silas and Blaziken were finally able to straighten their backs after crouching the whole way down.
"What a massive underground cave," Silas marveled.
With his night vision goggles on, he could see that the cavern was at least three to four meters high, and wide enough for three or four people to walk through side by side.
The Pokémon ecosystem was truly fascinating. This place was likely the handiwork of an Onix.
"Boldore!"
Boldore's deep voice echoed through the underground.
Blaziken moved protectively beside Silas.
Under Boldore's guidance, after several twists and turns, they arrived at a passage.
Silas pointed at the rock wall at the end of the tunnel and asked Boldore, "You're saying there's something behind here?"
"Boldore!"
Boldore confirmed it.
Silas was intrigued. If Boldore could sense it, then other Pokémon probably could too so why was this still just a rock wall?
"You're saying you can't control the rocks here?"
After hearing Boldore's explanation, Silas's interest only grew stronger.
