Martin set the glass down, his striking face clouded in confusion.
This was just a test—just to see how much Rae meant to Waldo. Now he had his answer. But why… why did the answer feel so wrong? Why did he wish he hadn't asked?
Before he could sort out his thoughts, his phone rang—its sharp trill only amplifying the tension in his chest. He picked up with a scowl, his voice clipped:
"What is it?"
"Alpha," came the low voice of one of the Shadows assigned to Cecilia. "Her condition's deteriorating. She's… emotionally unstable."
Martin's expression turned to stone. His eyes darkened.
"Speak clearly. What's going on?"
"Her eyes—there's been an infection. It's progressing fast. She could still perceive faint light before, but now…" The Shadow hesitated. "She's completely blind."
Martin's brows drew together into a hard line.
"Didn't Fitch say it was under control?"
