Long after Ryuji, Tanjiro, and Inosuke entered the mountain, the faint heartbeat and breathing of the severely injured Demon Slayer suddenly ceased in Zenitsu's ears.
Zenitsu's hearing was exceptional; he could hear heartbeats without a stethoscope or physical contact. The faint sounds had vanished, causing him to look at the Slayer on the ground.
"Dead?" Zenitsu wondered.
He cautiously approached the Slayer, checking for a pulse.
One second, two seconds, three seconds…
After a long time, Zenitsu felt nothing, recoiling in shock. "He… he's really… dead!"
He quickly distanced himself, his nerves on edge.
His small sparrow flew to him, chirping anxiously.
Zenitsu didn't understand. "I envy you, being carefree, never experiencing the hardships of being human!"
The sparrow, seeing Zenitsu's lack of understanding, frantically pecked at his face.
"What are you doing?! Pecking people is painful! You're not cute at all! Nezuko, a {demon}, is cuter! You're too aggressive for a sparrow!" Zenitsu scolded angrily.
Then, he remembered something, his expression changing drastically. "Ah~ Tanjiro took Nezuko into the mountain! He took my beloved Nezuko! Tanjiro is terrible! Taking a girl to such a dangerous place! Idiot! Idiot! Idiot! Idiot~"
He sprinted towards Spider Mountain with lightning speed.
"Nezuko! I'm coming! Don't be afraid! I'll protect you!"
He ran until exhaustion slowed him. His adrenaline faded.
"Nez…zu…ko…ko…ko… Nezuko, where are you?"
"Ryuji-senpai, Tanjiro, Inosuke, where are you? Were you killed by {demons}?"
"Even Chutaro isn't with me!"
Exhausted from searching, Zenitsu sat on the ground. The screams in the mountain were clearer and more terrifying than those from below.
His fear overwhelmed him, and he began to cry.
He wiped his tears. The sparrow landed on his head and chirped.
Zenitsu caught it, nuzzling his face against it.
"That's great! Chutaro! You didn't abandon me! You're so cute, though not as cute as Nezuko~" Zenitsu said, nuzzling the sparrow, named Chuntaro.
