Chapter 93 - Chapter 93: The Argent Excavators

Miles deeper into the untamed eastern wilderness, far closer to the rumored location of the Alvari fortress ruins and the legendary Echoing Forge, a different kind of camp was established. This was no mere Explorer's League staging post, but a temporary, yet formidable, command center of the Argent Excavators. Prefabricated metallic structures, powered by humming generators and defended by automated turrets and disciplined, silver-and-grey uniformed Excavator Legionary NPCs (Levels 40), formed a stark, efficient perimeter against the encroaching wilds. Inside the largest command tent, advanced cartography tables displayed holographic projections of the surrounding region, while data terminals flickered with incoming survey reports and energy readings.

This was the forward base for the Excavators' current high-priority operation: locating and securing Alvari sites of significant power within the Serpent's Tooth mountain range. The Argent Excavators were a powerful, well-funded, and notoriously ruthless consortium of players and aligned NPCs, their sole focus the acquisition, reverse-engineering, and exploitation of Alvari artifacts and technology. They operated under a veneer of "archaeological research" and "technological advancement," but their methods were often brutal, their disregard for historical preservation or the safety of competitors absolute. Profit and power were their only true gods.

Within the command tent, Chief Surveyor Marius (Level 50+ NPC, designated 'Lead Analyst'), a gaunt, sharp-featured man with cold, calculating eyes and clad in the formal attire of an Excavator executive, reviewed a complex energy signature map with Commander Vorlag (Level 28 Player, Marauder class). Vorlag expression was a mask of controlled impatience as Marius meticulously analyzed the data.

"The gravimetric resonance patterns are undeniable, Commander," Marius stated, his voice precise and devoid of emotion. He tapped a section of the holographic map displaying a deep, shielded valley within the Serpent's Tooth range. "Sub-harmonic energy cascades, consistent with a large-scale Alvari power source, likely a creation or attunement forge of significant output. The legends of an 'Echoing Forge' in this sector appear to be… substantially accurate."

Vorlag's eyes narrowed. "So, we've found it. My teams are ready to deploy. What are the extraction protocols?"

Marius held up a hand. "Patience, Commander. The energy signature is heavily shielded, indicative of active, or at least semi-active, Alvari defensive systems. A direct assault would be… inefficient. Our primary objective is containment of the site and rapid asset extraction, specifically any unique power cores, control matrices, or intact weapon schematics. The Forge itself, if too large to move, must be thoroughly scanned and its operational principles reverse-engineered on-site."

He then brought up another display – a satellite feed or scout drone report showing a faint heat signature trail moving slowly towards the target region. "There is, however, a minor complication. Or perhaps, an opportunity."

Vorlag leaned closer. "Competition?"

"Of a sort," Marius replied dismissively. "Our long-range scouts confirm a small expedition, likely Silverhaven-affiliated – a mix of Explorer's League guards and what appear to be academic or traditionalist elements – entered the broader region approximately one day ago. Their trajectory, while slow, is generally aligned with the valley containing the Forge." He zoomed in on the heat signatures. "No significant military force. Probably a low-priority, underfunded research group, or perhaps followers of that recluse, Jian, chasing myths."

Vorlag's expression tightened at the mention of Jian, a name associated with Alvari lore and, by extension, potentially valuable artifacts. "Jian-affiliated? They might be carrying something of interest themselves, or possess knowledge we lack."

"Precisely my thought, Commander," Marius said, a thin smile touching his lips. "While they pose no direct threat to our main operation, their presence is an uncontrolled variable. And uncontrolled variables are… untidy." He looked directly at Vorlag. "Your orders are as follows: Deploy your primary artifact retrieval team, 'Steel Vipers'. Intercept this minor expedition before they reach the valley of the Forge. Your objectives are threefold."

He held up one finger. "One: Secure any unique Alvari relics or data they might possess. Prioritize anything resonating with the Forge's energy signature or appearing to be a key or access device. Discretion is preferred, but speed is paramount."

A second finger. "Two: If they possess specialists – enchanters, linguists, historians with specific Alvari knowledge – capture them alive if practical and their extraction does not compromise the primary objective. Their knowledge can be… assimilated."

A third finger. "Three: Eliminate the rest. Discreetly, if possible. We want no witnesses, no survivors to report our activities or the Forge's location to Silverhaven authorities or rival organizations before we have secured the site. If they resist or interfere in any way, show no hesitation." Marius's eyes were cold. "The Echoing Forge site, and all its contents, will be ours, and ours alone. The Argent Excavators do not share."

Vorlag felt a grim satisfaction. This was the kind of operation he excelled at – swift, brutal, and profitable. And the chance to potentially recover valuable artifacts before even reaching the main target was a bonus. He also hadn't forgotten the humiliation of his defeat by the unknown Bladesworn who had been with a similar caravan weeks ago. While this new group was likely unrelated, any "Jian-affiliated traditionalists" were suspect.

"Understood, Chief Surveyor," Vorlag said, his voice a low growl. "The Steel Vipers will deploy within the hour. We will secure any assets and neutralize the interference. Consider them… tidied."

"Excellent, Commander," Marius replied, already turning back to his energy signature maps. "Report success swiftly. The main Forge extraction team will be on standby for your signal."

Commander Vorlag gave a curt nod, then turned and strode out of the command tent. He immediately began issuing orders through his private player interface and to his waiting NPC Legionary sergeants. His elite player team, the "Steel Vipers" – a handpicked group of high-level, ruthlessly efficient players specializing in PvP, ambush tactics, and artifact retrieval – began to mobilize with cold, practiced efficiency. They checked their gear, stocked up on combat consumables, and received their briefing on the target caravan's last known position and likely route.

Within the hour, a heavily armed and well-supplied force of Argent Excavator players and their supporting Legionary NPCs slipped out of the command post, melting into the rugged wilderness. Their objective: intercept the Explorer's League caravan, strip it of anything valuable, and ensure no one reached the Echoing Forge before them. An inevitable collision course had been set, the race for the ancient Alvari installation turning deadly before its prize was even in sight.
