His gaze locked onto her, intense and unwavering.
"Does it really matter whether I believe you or not?"
She paused, a small, self-mocking smile tugging at her lips.
Yeah… whether he believed her or not had nothing to do with her. So why did her heart start pounding so hard when he looked at her like that?
"I'm going back to my room," Rachel said quietly, stepping sideways to walk past Jeffrey and head for the stairs.
But after just two steps, he suddenly grabbed her arm, and the next second, she was pulled right into his arms with so much force, it was like being thrown into a tight embrace.
"I believe you're innocent," he said, leaning down, his voice deep and close to her ear. "But do you really think you can figure this all out by yourself? It's been three years. Have you thought about the possibility that the truth might never come to light?"
Rachel looked up at him, her eyes meeting his. His were so clear, yet filled with something unreadable.
She smiled softly.
