Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 - Conspiracy

When Josh said that Tony Wendis was planning to murder her, Margot was both terrified and shocked. She immediately tried to get up, but Josh held her back.

"What are you doing?" Josh asked.

"Of course I'm calling the police!" Margot said, flustered.

"Call the police? And then what? Tell them your husband wants to kill you? Do you have any evidence?" Josh rolled his eyes.

"Didn't you say he sent someone to follow me, planning to kill me? Where's that person? He can testify!" Margot calmed down a bit and said.

"It's useless. Although I bribed him, he made it very clear at the time that he'd never testify against your husband. He's a mafia member, and your husband didn't contact him directly, but went through his boss... you get what I mean?" Josh half-truthfully explained. "And unless I'm mistaken, he's already taken the money I gave him and left Chicago."

"Then what should I do? He won't stop!" Margot realized from Josh's words that calling the police wouldn't help her deal with Tony Wendis.

As long as they weren't officially divorced, Tony Wendis probably wouldn't let her go.

No — Margot quickly realized — given how vicious Tony Wendis had shown himself to be, even if she managed to divorce him, he'd probably still do everything he could to get revenge on her.

"It's simple. Strike first, or be struck…" Josh said coolly.

"What?" Margot was startled by his words.

Although what Josh had revealed made her hate and fear her husband, the idea of murder was still far too extreme for a relatively naïve wealthy housewife like her — something she had never even considered.

But then again, it did seem like a very effective solution.

It must be said, everyone has a devil inside them.

The only question is whether someone lets it out.

"But… how would we do it? And it's illegal! Josh, we're still young. If the police find out, it'll ruin us," Margot, though tempted, was still a law-abiding citizen and naturally felt fear and aversion toward such a serious crime.

"Of course I understand that, darling. But I never said we'd do it ourselves. If he can bribe the Mafia, so can we. After all, there are countless unsolved cases in the U.S. every year. As long as he disappears quietly, no one will ever know what happened." Josh wrapped his arms around Margot's enticing body and whispered like a devil in her ear.

Though he spoke of hiring a hitman, Josh had already made up his mind to do it himself.

Because with his dimensional trading system as a cheat, doing it himself would leave far fewer clues and evidence than using someone else.

In the U.S., where evidence is key to the legal system, as long as there's no body, no murder weapon, no complete chain of evidence—even if someone suspects you, it's hard to convict if you don't confess.

If it had been before today, Josh would never have so easily decided to commit murder.

Clearly, that shot he fired today had opened Pandora's box within him.

When one has power beyond the ordinary, and once they cross their original moral boundary, it's extremely difficult to return to the right path.

Not becoming a monster is already a sign of conscience.

That's exactly where Josh was now.

"But…" Though Josh's words were tempting, it still wasn't easy for Margot to fully make up her mind.

Josh, however, didn't want to waste any more words — he directly silenced the beautiful housewife.

Margot, for all her apparent maturity, was no match for him.

That night, Margot didn't even return home.

The next morning, Margot and Josh had breakfast affectionately, like a newlywed couple.

"If we go through with your idea, how much money do you think it'll take? And how should we find someone trustworthy to do this?" Margot asked Josh in a low voice.

A hero may falter at a beautiful woman — but often, it works the other way around too.

And since women are typically more emotional, once they fall in, it's even harder for them to get out than it is for men.

That was exactly Margot's situation now.

She was already an emotional woman — otherwise, she wouldn't have been so easily infatuated with Tony Wendis back then, marrying him despite her father's fierce opposition.

And if Tony hadn't gone so far over the years, they wouldn't have ended up like this.

Now, being with Josh made Margot feel enchanted.

She just wanted to be with Josh.

So Tony Wendis had become the biggest obstacle in her path.

"It won't cost much — a few thousand bucks, maybe ten grand tops. As for the people… whether it's an immigrant neighborhood or a refugee camp, I'm sure there are plenty who'd be willing. Leave this to me," Josh readily took the task upon himself.

"...Alright, I'll provide the money. I'll go to the bank later," Margot nodded.

Josh didn't refuse.

Margot provided the money, he did the job — the two of them were now truly bound together in conspiracy.

It wasn't that Josh was especially sinister — just that having a shared dark secret would bind their relationship more strongly than mere love or physical intimacy ever could.

After breakfast, the two headed out together, planning to go to the bank.

"You know what I just thought of?" In the car, Margot looked at Josh as he drove and said.

"What?" Josh asked.

"Bonnie and Clyde!" Margot said.

At that, Josh twitched the corner of his mouth.

Although the Bonnie and Clyde movie hadn't come out yet, the real-life story — like that of the legendary outlaw John Dillinger — was already famous across America since the Great Depression era.

It had even inspired a psychological condition named after them but the comparison wasn't exactly a lucky one.

After all, that couple ended up riddled with bullets.
