Chapter 14 - After the party

Once the cake was eaten, which was very good, we then played a game of cards. We couldn't play for very long because a was struggling to hold the cards.

After we decided to stop playing, Ben came up to me and told me, "I'll carve you a card holder, so next time we play it should be much easier for you." I thanked him. I had never heard of a card holder before, but based off of its name I could guess what it was.

"So why don't you go back to your room to sleep? You look really tired," said mother. "No mother, I wanted to watch the snow. That was my main goal of leaving my room!" Ben laughed and said, "Wasn't the party enough for you? It will probably still be snowing tomorrow." "True, but there's no guarantee that it will. You can't predict the weather! I've been looking forward to it for so long." Ray then chimed in, "You've only been looking forward to it for a week!" "Not true I was looking forward to it even before I knew it was actually a possibility." "But what's the point of watching the snow if you end up falling asleep while doing it?" Asked Mikey. "Falling asleep to watching snow sounds lovely to me." Ben snorted, "Yeah, until you catch a cold from being so close to the window for so long!"

"Enough you four," interjected mother, "Sue you can watch the snow for a little while, but as soon as I say it's back to your room for a nap." "Yes ma'am," I replied happily. I thought this was a fair compromise.

Ray relented and pushed my chair over to the window near the front door. "If you get cold, just shout for one of us will come and bring you back to your room. You don't have to wait till mom says you need to leave." "I understand. I promise to do so."

All four of them then went off to do their own things. Mikey went off to wash the dishes in the sink. I could hear the quiet clatter of the plates and cutlery. Mother got up from the couch and went over to the bookshelf. She grabbed a book and then sat down in the armchair where Ray had been sitting. Ray and Ben both went off to their bedroom.

After they had all gone off to do whatever it is, they were doing, I turned my attention to the window. it was my first time seeing the outside in so long. It wasn't snowing very hard. It was more of a dusting of snow, but from the white covering the entire ground and all the trees could tell it had been snowing pretty heavily recently.

I said at the window for quite a while until mother set her book aside, and said, "Alright time for you to go take a nap." "Yes mother," I said with a big yawn. She smiled at me, "Let's get you cleaned up and change before you go to sleep. I have a feeling that you're going to sleep through dinner"

She walked over to me and gave me a kiss on the forehead, "Oh my, you're quite cold! Why didn't you ask one of us bring you back to your room like Ray told you too do if this happened?" "Sorry mother I really didn't notice. I was enjoying the snow so much that I wasn't really paying attention to anything else. It really wasn't intentional," I said sounding guilty.

"Don't worry, sweetheart I'm not mad at you. Let's just get you to your room so you can warm up." Mother then walked around my wheelchair and started to push me to my room.

Once we got to my room, mother called for my brothers. When they showed up at my door, she said to them, "Ray and Mike could you please help on to her bed. Ben, after they do that, could you please take the wheelchair out. There's not a lot of space in Sue's bedroom, so it would be better if we kept in the living room when she isn't using it"

"Yes ma'am," all three of them replied at the same time. Ray and Mikey then walked over to me, Ray to my left and Mikey to my right.

I knew they could both tell that I was cold when they grabbed my arms to help me to the bed, but they didn't say anything about it. I appreciated this greatly because if they had Ben would be extra paranoid from now on. Ray didn't look particularly pleased with me, but he still let it slide.

After they helped me to the bed, all three of them left with Ben pushing my wheelchair. Once they were gone, mother Then closed my door and started to help me clean up and change.

The whole time she was helping me, I had trouble keeping my eyes open. I was far more tired than I had realized. This did make sense though because this was the most activity I had had in over a year!

When that was finished, my mother tucked me into bed and gave me a kiss on the forehead. Before she Blew out the candle and left I grabbed her hand. "Mother, do you know why I always say yours and father's presents for last?" "No I don't. Why do you do that?" "Because my brothers gifts, while always very thoughtful, are not always the best. While I always know that my mother and father will get me something that won't disappoint me. You two know me the best, so I save your gifts for last to make sure the giftgiving ends on a pleasant note." She smiled at me looking genuinely happy and squeezed my hand. "Have a good sleep, Sue." "Thank you mother. I'll see you when I wake up."

She then blew out the candle by my bedside, and then walked out my door and close it behind her. shortly after she left, I drifted off to sleep.
