Sitting alone in his cell, he thinks back to his first meeting with Carmen. It was at the primetime ball. The sun had just set.
The ballroom is lit by large diamond chandeliers, the walls are all covered with ornaments and the ceiling is decorated with small carved plaques.
Carmen enters the room, accompanied by her twin brother. She wears a simple but elegant midnight blue dress, white gloves, and a blank stare. She doesn't like crowded places; she feels suffocated. She observes the crowd from afar. Standing next to her brother, she notices a rather imposing man in the distance, surrounded by several ladies. For a moment, their eyes meet, and she recognizes him: it's Captain Brynjar Øvstegård, the most famous man in the country, more precisely for his many victories during the war. Across the room, Brynjar, tall and straight, also observes. He doesn't speak and rarely drinks. He's not very comfortable at balls, but he's invited, as he often is. Finally, his gaze meets Carmen's. He doesn't lower his eyes. He doesn't lower his eyes. He didn't even pay attention to the woman around him; it was as if everyone had disappeared except for him and her. He felt a strange sensation, as if something had lit up in his heart.
He turned around for a moment to talk to his friends before looking for her, but she was gone, as if she had vanished into thin air.
Silence reigned. Only the sound of the wind caressing the leaves could be heard. He walked aimlessly. Then he heard a small voice in the distance, which he could not distinguish. He saw no one sitting in the greenery. He moved forward a few meters.
She stood there, wearing a midnight blue evening gown. When he looked into her pale eyes, he thought he saw a light and felt an electric shock run through him.
"Good evening," he said, holding out his hand for her to stand up. She stared at it for a few seconds, then shook his hand back.
"Good evening," he said, holding out his hand for her to stand. She stared at it for a few seconds, then shook his hand back as she stood.
"Good evening, I'm Carmen Soltenberg, nice to meet you," she said without looking at him.
My name is Captain Brynjar Øvstegård. I'm surprised you don't know me, if I'm the same person as you.
"Oh, I see, you're a soldier," she said timidly, "but what brings you here?" In fact, she recognized him at first glance; he was the kind of man who would drive any woman crazy. What shocked her was that he was never really interested in a woman; he preferred to push her away.
I don't feel like dancing and having fun tonight and you
I came to get some fresh air, but to be honest, I don't really like dancing. They started walking, the wind rustling Carmen's hair.
