It was a normal day for Fade, just like any other. He went to school and came back, taking care of his grandfather—in short, it was an ordinary day... His mother and father had died when he was very young, and he didn't remember his grandmother; he had only seen her in photographs. Fade's life was quite monotonous and stagnant; he did the same things every day, following a routine without any ups and downs. But there was always a feeling inside him—an unwavering belief that he wasn't meant to live such an empty, meaningless life, and that one day he would achieve something great. However, even this feeling had become so accustomed to monotony that he had grown numb to it, almost alienated from it. In a way, he had also grown accustomed to comfort; it had become a habit of sorts.
That day, he had just returned from school. Their house was a two-story, detached structure, and Fade's room was on the upper floor. He took the key out of his pocket and opened the door. He found his grandfather in his usual chair, watching television. His grandfather smiled slightly and asked him, "How was school?" "Same as always, no change," said Fade. "I'm going to my room now." He headed for the stairs. He went upstairs and entered his room.
He stood in front of the full-length mirror in his room and looked at himself. Slightly slanted, sleepy eyes; white, misty hair; a stocky body. He was 5'10". This was the person he saw every day, no one else. He picked up one of his favorite books, lay down on his bed, and began to read. This was one of his favorite moments of the day. But that day would not be one where he could read a book in peace.
Suddenly, the sky began to darken. When he turned toward the window, he heard a loud thud. He was shocked! A massive meteorite, completely covering the sky and glowing like white flames, was slowly descending. Fade thought his mind was spinning, that he was going mad. His eyes were dazzled, and when he looked again, he saw that nothing had changed. He didn't know what to do. As he tried to understand the situation, his consciousness suddenly faded.
Fade didn't know it, but at that moment, the consciousness of all people on Earth had faded; some were lucky, others were not. Fade's consciousness was awake, but he couldn't see anything; it was pitch black around him. Strange letters appeared before his eyes, but his brain couldn't comprehend any of them. It was as if the letters were meaningless, and Fade was stuck in this situation.
Slowly, his consciousness began to return, and he was waking up. He immediately turned toward the window, but his eyes weren't used to the light, so he couldn't see anything. He rushed out of his room and ran down the stairs because he had thought of his dear grandfather. When he reached the bottom, he saw that his grandfather's chair was empty. He was shocked and frightened to realize his grandfather wasn't there. He struggled to make sense of what was happening.
He immediately headed toward the front door and opened it. Before him lay a completely different world...
