“Dead?” Kyle Leonard mumbled. “Baroness Eleanora Aiselle is dead?”
His piercing gaze scoured my face for a hint of deceit. My heart raced, holding my breath as I waited for what he would say next.
Finally, he spoke, each word measured. “Are you willing to cooperate with my investigation?”
I nodded, gulping quietly in anticipation. Kyle’s gaze shifted to the room around us, his attention finally shifting to the chaotic energy swirling in the air. His focus was clearly centered on the remnants of the dragon’s magic, putting aside his discomfort at the messy state of the house for now. Although the detective no longer saw me as a criminal that he’d arrested fifteen times before, I was still under suspicion in the case of Lizeverne’s missing egg. There was really no choice but to cooperate.
Hastily, I spoke. “I’ll cooperate fully, I promise. You’ve been here for almost a week—you know that I’m too lazy to rebel. I’d rather just get caught than try and escape.”
