Chapter 12 - CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

CHAPTER TWELVE: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

The young man stood tall, his eyes locked on the king, as the chiefs continued to berate him. Chief Maye, a stout man with a thick beard, sneered at the young man. "My lord, don't waste your time on this mannerless boy. He doesn't deserve our respect, and we shouldn't give him the chance to speak."

Chief Laye, a lean man with a scar above his left eyebrow, nodded in agreement. "I second Chief Maye. This boy needs to be taught a lesson. He should be punished for his disrespect, and we shouldn't bother listening to what he has to say."

Chief Maye added, his voice dripping with disdain, "As I look at him, I think he's untruthful. He wants to spin us a yarn, to tell us a cock-and-bull story. I advise my lord not to waste his time on this boy."

Another chief, a portly man with a thick neck, chimed in, "As I look at him, I think he's smelling of poverty. Maybe he's looking for a handout or a meal ticket."

Chief Iyere, a wise and aged man, intervened, his voice calm and measured. "Let the boy speak. We shouldn't judge him before he's had a chance to deliver his message."

The young man took a deep breath, his eyes flashing with determination. "I don't care about my life," he said, his voice firm. "If what I have to say is false, do with me as you please. But I assure you, my lords, that I speak the truth."

Chief Maye sneered at the young man. "You'd better think carefully before you speak, boy. If you lie to us or waste our time, you'll regret it. You'll lose your life, and we won't pity you."

The young man's eyes locked onto Chief Maye's, and he uttered two words that sent a shiver down the spines of the assembled chiefs: "Challenge accepted."

The room fell silent, the only sound the heavy breathing of the chiefs. The young man's words hung in the air, a gauntlet thrown down, a challenge issued. The chiefs exchanged nervous glances, unsure of what to make of the young man's bold declaration.

The king, however, simply nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "Very well," he said. "You have accepted the challenge. Now, tell us what you know about our soldiers."
