Chapter 8 - The Flaming Glove

Rune magic refers to a system of magic that utilizes runes – ancient symbols with both phonetic and conceptual meanings – for various magical purposes.

It was basically using ancient symbols to manipulate magic. Mostly they were used for enchantments like making a hammer send out a stream of lightning on impact or a sword that could cut anything it touches.

Minor runic enchantments like a sharpness and strength required only the magic of the rune mage to work.

More advanced enchantments that channelled elemental attributes or a sword that gets stronger the more it absorbs blood had to use the rune mages power alongside a magic stone specially attached to it.

The magic stone was available to power the enchantments without the magic of the user and very powerful enchantments drained a lot of magic power.

The only drawback of rune enchantments was the users imagination.

Mason was in his bathroom throwing up, the previous fight had taken a toll on him and his body even as strong as it was wasn't yet on par with the other students. He had the skill but not the strength and it would take time before his strength reached the desired level.

With nothing to do at the moment Mason placed a leather glove on his table , he wanted to practice an enchantment.

For the past two months he had been studying the rune arts and symbols understanding what each symbol meant and how to effectively combine the symbols to give meaning to his writing.

But writing down the rune didn't just do the trick, you had to had to keep infusing magic as you were writing if not the enchantments would become unstable and possibly dangerous.

It was advisable to also have a clear mind when applying rune magic because the state of your mind could affect the way your enchantments turn out and depending on the state of mind could become catastrophic for the the item user .

For example it was rumoured that the teleportation station took a rune smith twenty years to perfect just because of his state of mind .

So Mason tried as much as possible to clear his mind and for a moment became devoid of human emotions and feelings. Then he made up his mind on the enchantment.

In his previous life , Mason was no stranger to coding and writing down prompts so writing down the runes weren't a problem his only issue was his magic flow which could be stable for one second and then surge in the next second. The only reason that the enchantment didn't fail was because the magic input wasn't cut off.

And as a caution he put in writing that the item couldn't be used against him.

The enchantment made on the glove was one that allowed the user to summon flames that burn up the hydrogen and oxygen in the area causing it to burn hot and have a blue color.

It's downside was that if used in an enclosed space, the oxygen level in the area might drop down causing both the user and his opponent to pass out from lack of oxygen.

The flames from the glove was meant to be hotter than regular flame but it's intensity was determined by the users input of magic.

By the time Mason was done , the moon had already risen and his magic power was drained but still he dressed up, tucked his gun under his shirt and left his room for the practice area. He deduced that by the time he reached the practice area his magic reserves would have filled back up, enough for him to test the glove without passing out.

He was practically dragging his body when he came out of the dorm building that was when he saw the Austrian five as he liked to call them, John , Adeline, Darius, Peter and Hans.

" Hello everyone. " Mason said , and started walking away without waiting for a reply.

" Hey Mason is that you ? " John asked as he ran up with the others.

" Hey man I heard you wiped the floor with some second year students ? " Hans said while putting his hand across Mason's neck like they were long time mates.

Then a thought flashed into Mason's head and he acted on it immediately.

" Look guys I am going to the practice area to test out a weapon, you should come , especially you Hans." Mason said .

Soon they found themselves in the practice hall and Mason presented his glove for them to see .

" You guys have heard of rings that increase the magic capacity of a mage , well this item can allow a non elemental mage to use elemental attributes . "

Seeing the disbelief in the eyes of the Austrian five, he gave the glove to Hans who put it on.

" Now pour in as little magic as possible this is an untested product ." Mason reminded.

Hans still uncertain poured magic into the glove and what happened would be etched in his mind for as long as he lived .

Blue flames spurted out out of nowhere . But rather than a tongue of flame , it was an irregular looking flame like a candle left out on a windy day also it made some kind of weird buzzing sound when it was formed .

Hans then injected more power into the flames causing it to grow bigger sucking out all the air and moisture surrounding it . Hans then formed an unusually large blue fireball or rather a fire amoeba ( because of its irregular shape) and threw it down the field causing a crater to form where the fireball landed, the flames continued burning everything in its path sucking out all the moisture from the soil sending black smoke upward and one could even see the air distortion forming around the area sending heat waves around .

By the time the flames had died down , everything in a twenty five meters radius had been burnt to crisp .

" The item is defective, I will have to destroy it now ? " Mason said , not quite happy with the unstable flames.

" Defective you say , I wonder what your well functioning item would look like . " Hans almost screamed in reply .

" Infact I will pay for it , five thousand tokens, ten thousand, fifteen..." But Mason raised his hand stopping Hans , it seemed like he was really desperate for the item .

" All right, I will give it to you for ten thousand tokens but you will have to sign a waiver stating that I am not liable for any actions at accidents caused by this item ." Mason said .

Without wasting time any much time Hans transferred ten thousand credits and signed the waiver claiming ownership of the glove .
