Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Betrayal

Serena's POV

"Ah! James, I'm coming, darling!"

"Brittany, you're so good in bed. Yeah, give me a deep thrust!"

My hands were shaking as I slowly stepped closer to our bedroom. My eyes welled up in tears as I heard them grunt, cursing each other as they didn't expect that I would show up early. As I clutched my chest, it seemed a thousand needles were pinned in my heart; it was painful that I was experiencing a difficulty breathing.

"James, your wife will come. I know she's started to doubt our relationship," Brittany said in the middle of her moan. James laughed with mockery as I opened the door and saw everything. James was lying on the bed while Brittany was on top of him.

"James, how dare you do this to me!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. He cackled a laugh, stood up naked, and plastered a smirk on his lips.

"You don't have the right to question me, you useless bitch. We married each other for five years, yet you can't give me an heir!" James replied, slowly walking towards me.

"Ha, Serena, that's your only purpose here in the Smith family, but you failed to do your responsibility. I can't believe you!" Brittany didn't want to lose her chance to humiliate me. How stupid I was to think that she was treating me like her own sister!

"It's not my fault if we lose our baby. James, did you forget what you promised me? You said that you will change---" I couldn't finish what I was about to say when his hand raised and landed on my cheek, causing me to stumble on the floor. I tasted the metallic iron liquid from the corner of my mouth, and I looked at him in disbelief.

"How could you blame me for losing the baby? You're the one who's responsible to take care of it, and that's the only thing you need to do, yet you let yourself have a miscarriage! You don't even give me excitement in bed, and now you're mad because of Brittany!" James roared. His veins almost popped out from his neck, and his hand turned into a fist. His eyes were bloodshot in anger; he heavily took a deep breath as he was calming himself.

No, I wasn't the one who was at fault. Brittany was the one who pushed me. Yeah, I finally realized her real motives. She acted like she was about to fall from the stairs, and I was dumb enough to save her, which led me to lose my baby.

I treated her like my sister because I didn't have one. I gave her the benefit of the doubt, thinking that her mother was the reason why my parents got divorced. I didn't notice her real motives because she didn't expose them on the spot. She was the one who encouraged me to marry James and pushed me to be part of the Smith family.

Whenever Margaret belittled me, she was the one who always showed up, ensuring that I would fight for my relationship with James, but the truth is, she only used me to get closer to him. She wanted my place so badly that she succeeded in getting Margaret's approval.

"It's Brittany—she's the one who killed our child!" I yelled, choking to breathe as I felt the excruciating pain jabbing in my chest. "I did everything for you!"

"Are you trying to tell me that I will never get this wealth without you?" James barked. He gave me a deadly gaze as if he was giving me a warning to ensure that I would say nice words to him.

"That's not what I'm trying to say. I did everything to be a good wife for you!" I corrected.

"A good wife? You mean like a maid? Serena, I need a wife, not a helper. You supposed to be the image of James Smith, yet you only give me embarrassment. You should be thankful that Serena is beside me; she's the one who acts as you." He exposed himself and looked at Brittany with amusement.

"She's good in bed, too. You're a boring one," he added, rubbing salt in my wounded heart. This wasn't the James I had known because he was always gentle when it came to me. He swore that he wouldn't break my heart like what my father did to my mother.

"If you aren't the legitimate daughter of the Thompson family, I will never marry someone like you." His words were like thunder, and my eyes widened in surprise. Brittany grinned, rushed closer to James, and caressed his chest like she was calming him.

"James, you should never say that. After all, Serena is my sister. She's the inheritor of her mother's wealth," Brittany whispered, making me slowly stand up. It seemed my blood boiled in anger, and my vision turned dark when she mentioned my mother.

"Ah!" Brittany screamed when I grabbed her hair. All I wanted was to hurt her, kill her with her whoring mother. I pushed her, slapped her multiple times, and all she did was yell in fear. "James, stop her! H-Help me!"

"You fucking whore! I will kill you---" My words stopped as I felt a hard thing slammed on my head. Brittany cried and pushed me away from her, and I didn't get the strength to move. As I groaned, I saw James holding a baseball bat.

"I--I will do everything to kill you..." I murmured, and it was only hatred that stayed in my heart. I wished I didn't trust someone like him. I hoped I lied to my mother when she asked me about Brittany and James. I was blinded when it came to him.

James moved closer to me and swayed the baseball bat over my head. My vision turned fuzzy, and my body turned numb. I was the one who gave him the baseball bat from his favorite player; ironically, he used it to kill me.

"James, you better kill her now, or else that money will never be yours. We need the money for our future." Brittany gave me a death glare. James nodded and did everything she asked. My eyes were opened as I slowly reminisced about our memories together.

I didn't want to die. If fate were real, I wished I would have another chance to avenge myself for my mother. I would do everything to put justice in my hand and to change my fate. I would ensure he would met their karma because of me.
