Chapter 20 - ALONE

Nightwing slowly walks out of the restaurant with a conflicted look on his face. Huntress sees him and smiles.

"There you are, that was so incredible! The way we fell into that "good cop/ bad cop" routine without even planning it."

"Huntress... I think."

Huntress walks over to Dick and puts her hands on his chest.

"I feel so alive. Like we can take on this entire city. So, what did he tell you anyway?"

Nightwing let's out a sigh.

"Huntress, I think. We'd be better off- working separately after all."

Huntress smile slowly fades as she takes away her hands from Nightwings chest. Dick looks away, not being able to look her in the eyes. Huntress folds her arms and looks at Nightwing.

"I see. Just answer one question. Is it because I'm not enough like Batman? Or because I'm too much like him?"

Dick doesn't answer the question and turns to walk away. Huntress scoffs at him.

"Coward."

Dick stops walking and clenches his fist in frustration. He then turns around in anger.

"No! You don't get to judge me! You don't know anything about me! Yes you do remind me of Batman, but that's not what scares me."

Nightwing stops for a moment then Huntress steps up to him.

"What do you mean?"

Dick closes his eyes and lets out a sigh.

"Jason, Barbara. These names don't mean anything to you, but I've seen you dive into this case head first, and I see them. One's dead, the other will never walk again, even Batman who never allows himself to be a man outside the cowl. I... I just don't want you to sacrifice everything to this job. Like they did."

Huntress looks at Nightwing, surprised by his reason for trying to keep her out of the case. She then puts her hand on his shoulder.

"I get it. They paid the price. They're your martyrs, and your saints, but they chose this life. So did I. So did you. And I get that you're not complete without them, but you're not complete without me either. Not because of who we are. But because of what we do."

She puts both hands on Nightwings shoulders and the two look into each other's eyes.

"It's like a religion. Something we once lost, something we once chose, something we ended up freed by and tied to. Now, it's in the blood. It's apart of us. We throw ourselves into this because we needed this, boy wonder."

Dick thinks to himself for a moment, realizing that she's right.

Later, the two hide behind a building across from where Frankie Black is hiding out in.

"This the place?" Huntress asks.

"Yeah, Frankie's in there, waiting for a boat to take him somewhere far from here." Nightwing answers.

"Alright, let's move Robin." Huntress says.

Dick smirks as they run towards the building.

"It's Nightwing."

"I know."

In the wearhouse, Frankie is making last minute preparations to leave tonight. As he barks orders at his men, a wingding hits one of his men. Everyone looks up in shock as they see Nightwing and Huntress standing above them.

"Frankie Black. We've been looking for you." Dick says.

"So why don't you make it worth our time. Try to resist."

Black and his men quickly pull out their guns, but Dick throws a flash bang, blinding them for a moment. They then jump down and start the fight.

One of the thugs swings at Huntress, but she easily blocks, hits him in the throat and kicks him to the ground. She spin kicks another one in the face, then throws him through a box nearby. A punch is thrown from behind, but she blocks it and lands a right hook across the face. As another man runs at her, Huntress backflips and kicks him in the chest.

Nightwing pulls out his batons and hits a thug across the face and another in the leg. As one of the men pulls out a gun, Dick knocks it out of his hand and lands a front flip kick on him. Another guy runs at him, but he throws one of his batons at his head, dazing him a bit. Dick then runs, jumps into the air, catches the baton and kicks the thug to the ground.

Dick then looks over at Frankie and sees him running away.

"Blacks on the move!" Dick yells.

"I got him!" Huntress replies, chasing after him.

As both of them make it outside, she quickly shoots him in the leg, dropping him to the ground. Huntress then slowly walks over to him and kicks him over on his back and aims her crossbow at his eye. She keeps it there for a moment, thinking to herself. Huntress then pulls back, as Nightwing soon makes it outside to where they are.

"You got him." Nightwing says.

Huntress chuckles.

"You sound surprised."

Dick smirks.

"Not even a little."

The two share a smile as police sirens are heard from a distance. Later, as Frankie Black and his men are taken away, Nightwing and Huntress watch from a rooftop.

"Welp, I guess that's that." Huntress says.

"I guess so. It was- nice, working with you." Dick says, making Huntress smile.

"Likewise. Nightwing."

As she turns to leave, Dick grabs her arm.

"Huntress, wait."

She turns around and he puts her hands on her shoulders.

"Look, I've been doing this solo act for a while now. It's fine, don't get me wrong, I'm good at it, and I have people like Yin I can count on. But, tonight has been the first time, in a long time that I didn't feel..."

Dick doesn't finish his sentence, and looks down. Huntress then puts her hand on his face and finishes his sentence for him.

"Alone."

After she says this, the two lock eyes and share a passionate kiss on the roof top.
