Chapter 10 - Ten

Veronica's POV

Even though a part of me had thought that taking care of the four year old would be easy, I was to be proved very wrong.

I arranged the room to my liking, my minimal clothes going in the drawers as I changed into a pair of comfortable sweat pants and a big T-shirt.

I noticed that he was still not out of his room yet, almost as though he was avoiding me.

I gave a small cautious knock first, listening for any sound of invitation but when none came, I let myself in.

He was lying on his bed, an iPad on his lap as he watched a kids movie.

" I don't like you entering my room. Please leave" he said, his voice and his gait surprising me.

In many ways, he was just like his father, that same regal demeanor surrounded him, his clear cut voice and bluntness.

I swallowed, stuffing my nervousness deep down as I looked at him.

" Well I know we met a few hours ago and your dad told you my name but I would just like to formally reintroduce myself to you. I'm Veronica" I said, as though I was talking to an adult.

He did not raise his head up from his movies pretending as if I was not talking to him.

" Would you like to eat anything?" I asked him.

" No. Leave me alone" he said bluntly.

The sharpness of his words cut through me and I contemplated giving up. Perhaps I could just quit now and look for another job.

The kitchen was clean to the wick when I stepped inside, as though it had never been used.

Even though it looked barely untouched, the whole fridge was stocked to the brim with food and beverages, enough to feed and last for months.

A smart idea came to me as I pulled out flour and eggs. Perhaps I could try winning him over slowly.

Half way into baking the cookies, I heard his little feet shuffle as he came down stairs, looking at me with a mixture of surprise and conflict.

" Hi, I decided to make cookies, do you want one?" I asked him.

He looked at me, as though thinking carefully of his next answer. And without another word, he walked towards the tray of freshly baked cookies, picking up some into a plate and sitting on the table before biting into it.

My heart swelled with pride as I looked at him.

Maybe somehow this would help him like me better.

" You can come help me bake them if you would like" I said to him but he did not respond, just biting into the cookies.

He sat there until I finished, watching me bake and cook, not a single word leaving his mouth but I could always feel his eyes on my back, watching me.

The sweat glistened on my body as I checked the time. It was time for him to have tangible food.

" I made macaroni and cheese. You should have some" I said.

I did not know what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised when he muttered a small" okay" .

I felt proud of myself as I watched him dig into the food, devouring it with so much gusto that it made me smile.

The front door opened and the looming presence of alpha Lloyd filled the house.

He took one look at me, before turning to look at his son.

I had rehearsed now I would greet him every time he came back from work but somehow the greeting seemed to be stuck to the roof of my tongue as he looked at me.

So instead I forced out,

" Hey, I made dinner, would you care to join us?" I asked.

He had already dropped his briefcase on the counter top, speaking slowly to his son, perhaps asking him how his day went and when those emerald eyes turned to look at me, I nearly felt my blood run cold.

" I won't be having dinner. Not now, not ever. Next time make what only the both of you can eat and count me out. And by this time he should be in bed. You feeding him at this time would give him a stomach ache so feed him earlier, I hate coming back to meet him awake so he should already be resting when I return home" he said, his rules rushing out of his mouth, barely giving me enough time to process his words.

I have a small bow of my head as I refused to meet his eyes.

" I apologize....alpha Lloyd" I said, the tears stinging my face.

His expression softened as he looked at me.

" You did a great job with the cookies, he says he loved them" he said and with that, he led his son up the stairs leaving me perplexed but also happy.

I knew I could do better with more trials, very soon I would have perfected the skill of taking care of the alpha's son.

I began to tidy up the kitchen, the Mac and cheese that I forced into my stomach churning.

I rushed to the sink and in a brief instant, I threw up, retching and retching until I felt light headed and my stomach felt empty.

Alpha Lloyd stood there, looking at me with a bored expression that also seemed to carry some sort of surprise.

" You should clean up tomorrow if you are too tired" he said and with that, grabbed a glass of water and went back up the stairs.

I stared at the staircase long after he already went up..

Did he perhaps know that I was pregnant? Would he have a problem with that?

I was about contemplating my next move when a call stopped me short

" Hi" I said into the receiver, my head still feeling light.

" Hello Miss. I am calling from your bank, I just wanted to tell you that you have been asked to surrender all the money in your account and for this reason, your account has been blocked" she said and I stared into space, shocked.

" Who did that!" I yelled.

" He says he was your former husband and that all the money belongs to him" she said and I felt the urge to throw up again.
