Early hours.
The call came before noon. Not from Mark. Not from Valerie. Not even from her new secretary.
It was directly from the director's office. Chairman Hughes himself. She felt her stomach twist the moment she picked up.
There was no warmth in his tone today. No chuckle. No amused sigh, just a clipped, "Now."
She dropped everything and left. By the time she stood in front of his office, she could feel the anxiety bubbling beneath her skin. Her heart beat faster than it should. Her palms were damp.
He's been kind, she told herself. Maybe this is about the governor's event. Maybe another press release or….
"GET IN HERE!" The voice tore through the door before she even touched the knob. Gina flinched, she realized there must be cameras around, there was no other explanation.
"Do you even understand what you've done?"
Gina blinked, confused. "I…. I'm not sure I…."
