Chapter 3 - Chapter3 Her mask

"Mia, Lambert, good evening."

Hannah, dressed in a striking red wrap dress, walked up to Mia with a tall, slender man by her side, her seductive red lips curving into a mocking smile as she looked her up and down.

The man beside her was none other than Lambert's cousin, Jonathan.

"Seems like you're really lucky, sister. Long time no see, and look how big your belly's gotten—"

Hannah smiled, watching Mia's belly, suddenly raising her eyebrows with a pointed look.

"Wait, my memory's failing me. I saw you today near the water bar by the hospital. Didn't you hear that pregnant women shouldn't be drinking those beverages? You should stay away from places like that," she said, feigning concern, but her words dripped with a subtle threat.

One sentence immediately reminded Mia of the words she had heard earlier today, and her slender fingers gripping the wheelchair armrest turned pale.

"Ah..." She opened her mouth, but couldn't say a word.

"You went to the water bar?" Lambert's face changed when he heard that.

Mia instinctively wanted to gesture in sign language to explain, but realizing something was off, she quickly fumbled for her phone.

"Don't worry about what my sister wants to say, Jonathan can understand sign language. Don't you remember back in college? My sister was at the deaf school next door, and Jonathan gave a sign language lecture there. I think you even wrote him a love letter… Oh, I'm sorry, I misspoke. You wouldn't mind, would you, sister?"

At this, Hannah pretended to cover her mouth, looking regretful, but everyone present could see she was clearly trying to embarrass Mia and Lambert.

But no one knew, except Mia, that the so-called love letter from back then had been forged by Hannah herself!

Lambert's current disdain for her was partly due to this.

Hannah's sharp voice was loud, and her intentional words drew the attention of many around them.

Mia habitually bit her lip. How badly she wanted to retort, to say that she had never liked Jonathan, and it was all Hannah's doing! But she was mute, and at that moment, all Mia could do was glare at Hannah.

However, just as Mia trembled with suppressed emotion, a cold, biting voice suddenly cut through the air.

"Get lost!"

Two simple words made the couple in front of them change their expressions.

"Who do you think you are, talking behind her back?"

As the head of the Wenshte family, even sitting in a wheelchair, no one dared to gossip about him openly.

Mia, stunned, looked down. Even though Lambert was in a wheelchair, he still exuded an aura of superiority, towering over others.

He... just spoke up for her!

Hannah's hand clenched tightly at her side, unable to contain her anger.

Why should a cripple be so easily able to humiliate her?!

Her beautiful eyes flashed with unwillingness, and suddenly, Hannah changed her expression.

"You're right, brother-in-law, Mia is now your wife. But if you care so much about her, why didn't you accompany her to the prenatal checkup? Aren't you worried about the baby?"

"Sounds like you don't like Mia's baby much. Why don't you and Jonathan have one instead? Let's see if he'll accompany you to the prenatal checkup."

Lambert, unmoved, spoke coldly, his tone as frosty as ice.

His deep, chilling gaze made Hannah shiver, instantly robbing her of the confidence she once had.

Yes, he was right. Even though she was now with Jonathan, everyone knew Jonathan's promiscuous ways and that he never took anything seriously. Despite all her efforts, he still hadn't made any commitments to marry her, let alone have children with her.

From beginning to end, Mia didn't look at the couple across from her, her gaze fixed on the man in the wheelchair, her heart filled with a bittersweet ache. It wasn't until she heard her mother-in-law's voice that she snapped out of her thoughts.

"Already thinking about having a baby before joining the Wenshte Family? Even if you have a child, it probably won't be as precious as the one Lambert and Mia will have. After all, it's the firstborn son and grandson of the Wenshte Family."

Jennifer, dressed in an expensive evening gown, gracefully approached and casually linked arms with Mia, but her eyes were filled with scrutiny as she looked at Hannah.

As the biggest thorn in her side, Jennifer made no secret of her disdain for the second branch of the Wenshte family, and she knew exactly how to strike without mercy.

Upon seeing the intimate interaction between Hannah and Jonathan, Jennifer's tone was laced with disdain.

"Well, thanks to this young lady's reminder, I'll have to pay more attention to Mia's well-being. After all, as the wife of the head of the Wenshte Family, there are plenty of jealous people around, and I'd like to be the first to notice if something goes wrong."

Her words clearly warned Hannah and Jonathan: if anything happened to Mia's baby, she would hold them accountable first.

Although she was defending Mia, everyone present had their own agendas.

If not for Lambert being there, Mia probably would've fled long ago.

"What does Jennifer mean by that? Is she implying that I'm jealous of my own sister?" Hannah, publicly exposed, could no longer maintain her composure and quickly feigned a look of grievance.

Jennifer raised an eyebrow in response. "Who is this young lady?"

"I'm Jonathan's girlfriend, Hannah!" Hannah raised her chin, a flash of provocation in her eyes. Though Jonathan remained silent throughout, at least now, she had every right to stand by his side.

However, Jennifer let out a sharp, cold laugh.

"Girlfriend? Which one?" She glanced at Jonathan and casually asked, "I remember none of Jonathan's girlfriends lasted more than a month. So, which number is this one?"

Hannah was left speechless, her face turning red with embarrassment!

Lambert, showing signs of irritation, clearly didn't want to waste more time, and coldly said, "Mia, push me outside to get some fresh air, it's too noisy here."

Mia was more than happy to escape the suffocating battlefield and pushed Lambert towards the exit.

Behind them, they could still faintly hear Hannah's frustrated stomping.

The lavish European-style corridor was quieter and more elegant compared to the main hall. Mia and Lambert stopped in front of a large window. From afar, the two striking figures appeared surprisingly well-matched.

Of course, if you ignored the man's gloomy expression.

"Didn't get your way, are you feeling angry?"

Still immersed in the relief of Lambert standing up for her, Mia froze. Lambert slightly lifted his head, his handsome face filled with contempt.

"Don't play dumb. Didn't you team up with Jonathan to humiliate me? Wasn't that your goal?"
