THE WATCHER: REVOLUTION

Episode 4: Where They First Learned to Watch
---
The chute spat them out into blackness.
Jax rolled hard, hit a floor, then—
Click.
Kira landed beside him, flashlight already drawn. The dim beam flickered across ancient stone walls… walls that breathed.
"Where are we?" Jax whispered, rubbing his elbow.
"A place that was sealed before the first city was built," Kira replied, scanning the walls. "Before the AI... before the Watchers. This is where the recordings started."
"You mean like security cams?"
She looked at him. "I mean souls."
---
The tunnel was lined with eyes.
Thousands of eyes etched into the stone, blinking faintly, glowing with an inner red haze.
Not cameras.
Not lenses.
Eyes. Living ones.
"They recorded every sin ever committed here," Kira whispered. "Murder. Betrayal. Torture. The system used the echoes to create judgment protocols. The Watchers were born from this."
Jax backed up. "You're saying… they evolved from pain?"
She nodded. "And we're standing in their cradle."
---
Suddenly—movement.
One of the eyes blinked faster. Then another.
Whispers surged around them like hissing steam:
> "Jax… he still doubts…"
"Erase the unbeliever…"
"See what he hides…"
Kira shoved him forward. "Don't listen. Don't engage."
"How do I NOT engage with walls trying to mind-read me?!"
"They don't want your mind. They want your choices."
---
They ran, the light beam bobbing ahead.
Behind them, the tunnel began to change.
The walls weren't stone anymore.
They turned to screens.
Thousands. Endless. Each screen showing him—Jax—at different points of his life.
Some real. Some… twisted.
One screen showed him stealing food.
Another showed him killing his mother.
"That never happened!" he yelled.
"But it might," Kira said, eyes hard. "They feed on potential as much as memory. They're rewriting you. Testing who you really are under pressure."
"They want me to believe I'm a killer."
"They want you to become one."
---
Then the hallway opened into a dome.
A vast control room—ancient and mechanical, yet breathing like it was alive.
Floating above, like a god perched on cables and bone, was a Watcher Core.
Ten feet tall. Hooded.
No face—just a single, giant, vertical eye that blinked once… and paralyzed Jax in place.
> "Prototype JX-09… your trial begins now…"
---
Jax screamed, frozen in place. His body trembled violently as memories—both real and false—rushed through his mind like razor blades.
His body jerked.
Blood dripped from his nose.
Kira reached for him—
The eye snapped toward her.
She dodged—rolled—pulled a device from her belt.
A pulse grenade.
"CLOSE YOUR EYES!"
Jax couldn't.
The Watcher's voice hummed in his mind:
> "Watch, boy. Learn what you are."
---
BOOM.
The grenade exploded with a pulse of black light—anti-light—dimming the room like a star died inside it.
The eye flickered.
Jax dropped, gasping.
"You okay?" Kira shouted.
"I—I saw things—things I've never done. Things I wanted to do."
She nodded grimly. "That's what the Watchers feed on. Not what you did. What you might do if pushed hard enough."
"Why me?" he asked.
Kira stared up at the frozen Watcher Core, now twitching, repairing itself.
"You're a glitch," she said. "A blind spot in their system. You're the only one they can't fully rewrite."
---
Suddenly, the ground shook.
Alarms began to blare across the ancient systems.
> Unauthorized intrusion detected.
Multiple Watchers converging.
"They're coming," Kira said. "All of them."
Jax stood up. Face pale. Blood still trickling from his nose.
"No more running."
He looked at the cables feeding into the Watcher Core.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"Ending their sight."
He pulled a blade from her satchel. Flicked it open.
And ran straight for the cords.
