Chapter 4 - Dream-wandering

'7th June of the year 1349? Did I also time travel or does their calendar differ from the one I know. There is also the possibility, that their calendar started to exist at a different time than the one from earth I know.' David sat at the edge of his bed, while he tried to get his mind a bit clearer from the last headache.

'What about the years before zero? What is with them? How much does the original David know? He seems to know some things, but history doesn't seem to be his strength. I'll go tomorrow to a library and read through everything about history.'

Deciding this was enough thinking, David put his clothes away and went to bed.

Everything went dark as he closed his eyes, but small flame still flickered in the room. It was the flame of a candle. It shined in the darkness, more than it should.

David almost thought to be able to make out two closed eyes behind the candle, but after blinking twice he realized it was just the curtain of the window, which was pulling faces.

He first tried to ignore it, but the more he tried to not think about it, the less of an effect it had. In the end, he gave up and stood up from the bed, even though he definitely didn't want to do so.

While trying to be as silent as possible to avoid waking Theo up, he unwillingly walked towards the candle and licked his index finger and thumb of his right hand.

Reaching the candle, he held his two fingers on opposite sides of the candle and closed them in the flame. This made the flame go out and David yawned overly tired.

'Suicide attempts really make one tired, huh?'

Now, that the distraction got successfully removed, nothing stopped him from going to bed and beginning to sleep.

After closing his eyes, he felt his consciousness slowly slip away and everything went dark.

But not for long.

David opened his eyes or at least he thought he did. He had dreams on irregular occasions when sleeping, therefore he was quite sure he was in one, but something was weird.

This didn't feel like a dream. Normally dreams are chaotic and without any details. But currently, that wasn't the case at all. Looking around David's surprise spiked as he recognized that he was in Backlund. In a street, which the memories of the old David have never seen before, but he knew it was Backlund somewhere in East Borough, because the architecture style in this region was unique.

The sun shined on the sidewalk and in the sky were just two or three big clouds, but in comparison to normal days in Backlund, it looked quite warm. The time could be around three or four after twelve.

David was able to see small ants walking to the trash can. He was on a street, consisting of dirty quarry stones, but he couldn't smell anything. Like he never had a nose.

He also couldn't hear anything. He noticed that when a small carriage was eerily close to him and ...crashed into him? But there was no sound of impact nor any signs of destruction of either his body or the carriage.

Half his body was in the carriage and David looked at this with a confused gaze, while confirming that this must be a dream.

'Can I move in this weird dream or am I stuck in a carriage?' David formed these thoughts with the intent to move out of the carriage and it worked. His view changed and he looked now from the sidewalk at the way between carriage and the house, which looked much like a bar.

After some careful observation, he also confirmed the guess that the house is indeed a bar. The name is written above the entrance in big red letters.

Sparebeer Bar stood there. The old David had no memories of ever having seen this bar or even hear about it.

'One thing is clear, I am currently in some kind of ghostly state. It could be related to my powers. My pathway is after all called the Ghost-pathway. Maybe I'll have similar powers in the future.' David mused, but quickly stopped that as the small carriage's door opened.

Out of the door went a woman, assumable in her mid twenties, with easily noticeable, red hair. It wasn't very orderly, just enough so it doesn't disturb in the daily life.

Additionally, she wore a bright, not particularly conservative, but also not too open, green dress contrasting her red hair.

But the most interesting thing for David wasn't her clothing or body. It was the brown bag she had in her left hand.

David felt himself weirdly drawn to the object inside the bag. He felt a little urge, almost unconscious, to get it into his hands. Not enough to affect his mental state, though.

'But why would I want to have it? Do I need it for something? I'd first need to find out what it actually is.' David followed the young woman, who went with fast steps into the Sparebeer Bar.

In the bar weren't many people. About six or seven including the bartender guy, who looked like he drank more than his customers.

Some men followed her with their gazes, but stopped it as they realized that she didn't give them even a little bit of her attention.

She went immediately to the drunk bartender. David was quite sure that he was drunk now.

"I want to speak with Mr. Settler. It is urgent enough to require his attention. I found something that is somehow weird." She said that with a harsh tone, David definitely didn't expect her to be able to.

The bartender, apparently having come to the same thought, made a slightly surprised face and raised an eyebrow.

"He is today in room one one seven. Be careful, you know how he is sometimes. Not quite right in the mind and talking about supernatural beings when he is drunk." The bartender shook his head and turned away from the red-haired woman. His voice was switching between high und low sounds.

"That was all I needed to know. Thanks." She turned left from the counter and went up the stairs, which are right next to it.

David following her step for step, couldn't help but question if she was talking about whatever was in her brown bag.

She reached the room one one seven or one hundred and seventeen, if one so wants. While knocking on the door, she called out to someone.

"Here is Maria, I found something that could be used to make a Beyonder item or whatever you call it."

'Beyonder item? So, could it be a Beyonder Characteristic?'

"That is good. Did you check if you have someone tailing you?" She turned her head backwards, stopping very close before David's face.

He decided to turn around too. But even when trying his best, he couldn't find anyone looking at her or even tailing her.

"No, there is no one. You don't need to worry." Maria spoke while turning her head back to the door.

'I have to agree. Maria is right.' David lampooned right behind her.

David knew that she wasn't looking at him. He didn't even seem to exist in her eyes. She looked right through him as if he actually was a ghost.

'Am I even here or is this maybe a projection? The sun shone outside. The weather didn't look much different from how it was yesterday according to that guy's memories, didn't it? "

The weather is no different from yesterday.

A flow of information surged into his mind and David gritted his teeth as a new headache appeared alongside.

'According to this, the day in this projection must have been the sixth June. Interesting...'
